Bluemoon Angling Thread

Well you softarses might have stayed in but at least one of us had his big boy pants on.

Friday afternoon and suddenly the temperature was 8 degrees after a fairly mild night. I got some work done and was out fishing by lunchtime, trying my new crayfish lures on the Ned Rig for perch. I fished three different areas on three different canals and couldn’t get a touch but the last one had clear water so I decided to have a go for a pike with the ultralight gear using a shad lure. The decision paid off nicely with a battered pike of around 8lb. Probably poor handling by a noddy because this was right in the town centre.

Saturday was freezing again with snow flurries but I snatched a short session for the perch. At the second marina I got one, again on the Ned Rig which is proving to be something of a game changer in the cold.

Today, despite the artic temperatures I went to a reservoir with the heavy artillery: two dead bait rods. I knew I’d wasted my time when it was half frozen and coloured up. I gave it two hours then gave up.I drove around three different spots with my new pet Ned Rig looking for a perch but couldn’t get even a touch anywhere.

I got as far as getting some maggots on Thursday but had a bit of a low-level virus so felt a bit shit and couldn't face it. The birds loved them though.

Now up to my neck in work and the people I'm working for may not have any budget come April so it's eyes down and make some money whilst it's there and the weather's shit.

Fishing trips to Providencia in April and Portugal in May now looking very dicey.

Any brave souls who do get out, keep those reports coming.

Stopped at Cabela’s yesterday and picked up some of those Ned Rig’s (similar version there of) might have to give them a whirl later this week

I snatched a couple of hours this afternoon after work. Lockdown restrictions are limiting me but I’ve got my perch head on at the moment so I decided to experiment with another new rig- the Cheb rig, a version of the Ned Rig using a crayfish imitation lure and a unique hook and weight. It dances along the bottom and waves it’s claws. The rivers are flooded with snowmelt but I found a canal basin which doesn’t colour up last week so went their again.

I had another nice little result with a 1lb 2oz perch. The 2s are eluding me but I sense one is coming. My PB is an ounce under 3lb and I’d like to crack that this winter.

No posts since Tuesday and page 3 of 'off topic' FFS! :-) You sure can tell the weather is awful and there are still residue floods everywhere.
Been itching to get on the bank mate but I'm my elderly mum's carer and have to wait until Thursday, that's when my brother is off work and he can look after her for the day. I'm planning on fishing Lymn dam for pike but if it's frozen over I'll bob down to the river Weaver and have a bash on there.

If I go on the Weaver any stretches(for pike) to head for are appreciated. Cheers

Wrap up warm and tight lines for anyone brave enough to chance blanking. I've blanked the last 3 trips but it's only a matter of time before a decent Esox Lucious is in my net.

I presume you all know that Phil Foden has impeccable taste?

Where is that mate?

River Avon in Warwick closer to home than I usually go. It's near a pub called the Saxon Mill which is a cracking pub when it's open. You can sit outside having a beer overlooking the mill pond where the river comes under the pub and through the water wheel.

There's no fishing allowed in the pond itself but I've seen some big carp in there. I usually avoid it like the plague as there are too many dog-walkers, wild swimmers etc in good weather. These conditions mean there aren't many people about. It's cold though.

Nice one. I imagine you get quite a few different species in there?

When the pubs Re open and you have some time, I strongly suggest a visit to Wadenhoe, Northants and a pint in the King’s Head. It sits right on the River Nene and offers both great beer and fishing

Definitely. Never been to that part of the country but fully intend to once things get back to normal

I've had roach, perch, dace, gudgeon, carp, bream, trout and chub. I think I've had a rudd too but can't remember for certain. There are definitely pike because they harrass me and I understand there are barbel and I've seen pictures of some big ones but I've not had a sniff. There again, I haven't really got the patience to sit it out on a big bait.

He does, but it's a good job catfish are docile when caught because holding a feisty fish that size stood up could harm it if it flipped out of his grasp. I think he caught that Mequinenza on the Ebro a couple of years ago.
I actually commented on that in another thread. His fish handling is poor. There’s a photo of him standing up holding a carp too.

Fucking noddies.

Had a walk around Walkerwood reservoir local to me. Formally a trout water it's now a carp syndicate holding a couple or dozen or so carp(reputed) to low 30s. Hard to believe as its a slightly acidic cold resi containing little natural food. Beautiful water though, and the bottom reservoir of 4 that provide drinking water for greater Manchester.IMG_20210210_112450094_copy_1310x982.jpg
