Cracking reel in it's day, i think I've had 3 of them over the years. I loved the dab bail-arm. Mitchell lost their way when Shimano burst onto the scene offering fighting drag and baitrunner features, and their smooth engineered gearing was way ahead of anyone else at the time. Shimano have(maybe Diawa too) have made the best reels since I think.

I just love old/retro stuff so I still use them and a Mitchell 410A ,,
Once I’ve had my tea I’m going to learn how to put photos up on here :)

I have found a place down south somewhere that can service Mitchell reels,, I was going to have a go myself but I’d probably end up sending them away anyway lol

Bought a couple in the late 90's, but line lay was crap so unless you severely underfilled the spools it was birdsnests all the time. Loads of the parts were plastic rather than metal like the old ones. Come to think of it, it was only the paint job I liked. Have them on a couple of 6ft telescopic spinning rods now for 'emergencies'

Wasn't the 410 same reel as 440 without the automatic dab bail-arm?

I remember when my dad bought the 810 because he loved ledgering and it was (iirc) a 6/1 retrieve, finished in a dark metallic bottle green i think.

Never had that problem mate. What brand of line were you using? I think it was a matter of getting the tension right whilst loading the spool and not overloading it. About 1.5mm below the lip loaded with Maxima was perfect for optimum casting. I was really into long range waggler fishing back then so the 440 dab bail-arm worked really well provided the mechanism was kept dirt free and lightly oiled.

Interesting. I always doze off in hot weather. Especially on dog day afternoons when the bites dry up. It's why I always have a comfortable chair.
You need more stamina like me, lazy fucker : ),boiling hot day, I'd been on lates the night before, lovely snooze under the shade of a willow tree: ) can't beat it, fags and flask at hand for when i woke up

The 410 doesn’t have the dab bail arm, I never use it anyway , maybe I should try after nearly 50 years of fishing ;)

Yeah it was quite the thing back then. Post on here if you find owt please.
The memories are flooding back, who remembers swing tips for ledgering? They were cumbersome to say the least...

Yeah you should mate. I have my 41year old Fothergill & Harvey rod i keep meaning to use, i used to use it with an Abu 1044 i still have but its siezed up. There used to be an Abu repair/maintenance place in Middlewich , i bet it's long gone now.

Meanwhile I've just found a pic of the 810. It was made to last and someone is selling for a whopping £228 on eBay.Mitchell-810-Fishing-Reel.jpg
