Bluemoon's Official Top 100 TV Shows

Great to see Twin Peaks listing so highly.

I was reluctant to view the revival season but finally gave it a go a few months ago. I didn’t regret it.

It’s an audacious piece of television: blatantly surreal and just so defiant of most television conventions. Given that it was shot 25 years after Season 2 with many of the cast already having reached (or getting close to) pensionable age, along with its director, it really should have fallen flat on its face, and I am amazed that Lynch managed to get it made in the first place and retained complete directorial control over its considerable length.

For those who haven’t seen it, maybe you need to already be a convert to Lynch’s unique vision, so it does need approaching with caution.

But in my case, only Spiral and The Wire rate more highly.
Loved Twin Peaks when first shown but never bothered to watch the revival season to avoid disappointment ,but if it’s up there with Spiral and the Wire
Its on the list now
cheers

I struggled to get any enjoyment out of the third season Im afraid. It just wasnt Twin Peaks for me.
Needles to say I my anticipation went through the roof when the third season was anounced. But alarm bells started ringing when David Lynch threatened to walk unless he got 18 episodes instead of 9. Thats exactly the same problem they had with season 2, 25 years prior. Then I heard there were 250ish speaking parts! Inevitably this has to lead to underdeveloped characters and fly-by chameos by previous characters who I love.
But the biggest mistake of all, was the fact they spent precious little time in Twin Peaks itself. Twin Peaks WAS the main character of the first season. I was promised a re-visit to the Double R, Packard saw mill, Roadhouse, Ghostwood, Great northern hotel, even sparkwood and 21. But I was only given a glimpse of these places. What I got was a series set in Vegas. That just isnt my Twin Peaks.

I haven't seen the third series and thought "I'll add that" .....

And now I've read it's mainly set in Vegas, I won't bother. Totally agree that the setting of Twin Peaks was effectively the main character.

Thats just my opinion, so dont give it a miss just because of me. Most people who watched it, liked it, so give it a go.

This critical view of the third season is one that deserves to be taken very seriously and I am sorry that you didn’t get much out of it.

I have to say that I struggled with it myself to begin with, and was especially disappointed that Michael Ontkean did not reprise his role as Sheriff Truman (a minor spoiler for those who haven’t seen it).

But I finally surrendered to Lynch’s vision after a few episodes and just allowed myself to be swept along by it. In the end, I was bowled over, especially by the stunning but
completely off-the-wall eighth episode.

It might be worth pointing out that I am pretty much incapable of articulating why I like Lynch in the first place, though I can appreciate his perversely Oedipal Blue Velvet (and the most scarily deranged person I have ever met in real life was a bit like Frank Booth).

Plus, I didn’t care for Mulholland Drive all that much but thought Inland Empire was extraordinary, and also liked the much derided Fire Walk With Me (that has to be seen to appreciate some of the third series plot details).

So I am probably not the best person to mount a defence of Lynch, as I tend to like his more impenetrable material but am at a complete loss as to say why.

I actually ended up seeing the third series because Amazon was running a cheap deal on the DVD. So that’s maybe one way to give it a go. The other is to stream a couple of episodes and take it from there.

Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive is what compelled me to take the plunge with Twin Peaks. But hated Inland Empire. Funny how we can have differing opinions about certain Lynch projects yet have mutual appreciation of his other works.
This Frank Booth fella you know sounds.... interesting lol.
