BOJINOV DROPPED NEEDLESSLY FROM UEFA SQUAD

Ben Haim, Ball and Bojinov have been replaced by Bellamy, Bridge and Given in our 25 strong UEFA A Squad. Curiously Jo is still included despite his loan deal to Everton. In effect this means that by the deadline on Sunday they were still not sure Jo was leaving and decided that the chance of his staying and playing was a better bet than Boj returning to match fitness. That's it now, we have had our 3 changes and no others can be made other than from the B List of club trainees. See our squad via the following link:

I think this could turn out to be a very bad decision.

Subsequent registration
17.17 For all matches from the start of the round of 32, a club may register a
maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the
current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February
2009 at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.
17.18 One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club
competition matches for another competing club in the current season may
exceptionally be registered provided that the player has not been fielded:
− in the same competition for another club,
− for another club that is currently in the same competition.
Furthermore, if the player’s new club is playing in the UEFA Cup, his former
club must not have played in the UEFA Cup at any point in the current
season.
17.19 If the registration of such new players causes the authorised number of
players on List A to exceed 25, the club must remove the necessary number
of currently registered players, to reduce the squad to 25 players again. If a
club-trained player listed in places 18 to 25 on List A is removed, he must be
replaced by another club-trained player; if an association-trained player listed
25
in places 18 to 25 on List A is removed, he must be replaced by a clubtrained
player or by another association-trained player. Newly registered
players must wear set numbers which have not yet been assigned.
17.20 If a club cannot count on the services of at least two goalkeepers registered
on list A because of long-term injury or illness, the club concerned may
temporarily replace the goalkeeper concerned and register a new goalkeeper
at any time during the season and complete the official registration list A with
a goalkeeper fit to be fielded. If the replaced goalkeeper was registered as a
locally trained player, the new goalkeeper does not need to be a locally
trained player. The club must provide UEFA with the necessary medical
evidence. UEFA may require further medical examination of the goalkeeper
by an expert appointed by UEFA at the cost of the club. Once the injured or
ill goalkeeper is fit to be fielded again he can resume his position in place of
his nominated substitute. The change must be announced to the UEFA
administration 24 hours before the next match in which the goalkeeper is due
to play.

As I read it - if you were already registered to play in the earlier rounds - you can still be included in any squad played - it just says you had until the 1st Feb to register new players. Boj is not a new player. If that is not the case then the rules/laws have been written with too much ambiguity to them.

City fans in over hyping an injured player who has hardly played shock!

No but people who know about football outside of England know Bojinov is a top player.

maybe so, but doesn't mean he will automatically be a top player for us in the premiership. I would love for boj to do well but I just feel there is too much pressure put on him

where on earth has the OP got the info that 3 players were dropped for our 3 new recruits? There is absolutely no mention of this & it could just be an admin error on the site, im sure Boj would have been registered in the first place which means there should be no problem.

if we're only allowed replace three players in the 'A' squad list, I think Hughes has made the right decision. There should be no pressure on Bojinov to return ahead of schedule. I think this may have been the case at the start of the season, Jo was at the Olympics and Benjani was injured so we only had Evans and Sturridge to start the season.

Its more important that we got Bellamy, Bridge and Given in the squad

I'll be honest, i'm really struggling to get worked up about this, Bojinov has assumed some sort of legendary status after a couple of good pre-season games, 20 mins vs West Ham and a youtube video. If Samaras had gotten injured after his first couple of weeks the same situation could have applied.

He's injured, he probably won't get anywhere near full fitness soon enough to play an important UEFA cup tie, and no one knows whether he's actually going to be any good. Fair does some posters watched him when he was in Italy, but he's barely played since then, no-one knows if he's even going to recover fully.

I guess having him in the squad ahead of a player away on loan would make sense, on the off chance, but it hardly warrants the dramatic thread title and the 'i'm raging about this' posts.

This contribution (supported by billsbigbanana and salford blue among others) is v poor. Your apparent delight in your prediction that Bojinov will not play again this season allied to your view that he's overrated anyway is both baffling and completely misses the point.

HE COULD HAVE BEEN IN THE UEFA SQUAD & AVAILABLE TO PLAY IF FIT INSTEAD OF THE TOTALLY UNNECESSARY RICHARD MARTIN - GOT IT?

Point out the words that make my delight so apparent.

I've not claimed he is overrated, that would imply i think he is a poor player, at the moment i have very little opinion of what he is like as a player, because i've barely seen him play.

And i think you've missed the point of my post, rather than the other way round.

I guess you didn't read that bit?

City fans in 'i know better than the management team' shocker.

Are we not allowed to question a management decision any more?

Would have been fun during the Alan Ball days.

No, of course you're not.

The decision to leave Boj out of the UEFA squad seems even stranger seeing this article on the OS.

http://www.mcfc.co.uk/default.sps?pageid=115&pagegid={DBD12D53-8346-431D-A04F-5D0F8664DE80}&newsid=6626476&siteid=&pageno=&newscategory=&frommonth=12&fromyear=2008&tomonth=2&toyear=2009

Mark Hughes is happy with the striking options he has at his disposal, which he expects to be bolstered by the return of Valeri Bojinov in the near future.

The Manager has been reflecting further on the end of the transfer window, which saw Jo head along the M62 to Everton but did not see Roque Santa Cruz come to City, despite the Club's well-documented attempts to bring the Paraguayan in.

The Blues' front-line is not the tallest in the Barclays Premier League, and although Santa Cruz would have altered that the Manager is happy that the players he does have coming back will lend physical presence.

"He (Santa Cruz) would have addressed that," Mark declares, "but we allowed Jo to go and you could say that there’s height there. But Benjani is coming back, Danny Sturridge too and Valeri Bojinov is very close to getting games at reserve team level, so we hope he’ll be back soon. In all honesty, Jo was not likely to feature in the team from now until the end of the season.

"Boj has been joining in and doing warm-ups before joining in bigger area work, so we hope he joins in a game this week. Kelvin actually joined in for the first time on Monday, so that’s positive after so long away. We’re getting players back and that has to help before the end of the season.

"In the short term we might have a problem with physical presence, but we have different types of players, and Ched Evans is coming back from an injury and he has a presence up front as well.

"Roque would have ticked a lot of boxes, but we have alternatives."

Other than Jo, there were no outgoings from the squad on deadline day, with the Manager happy to keep City's younger talent from going anywhere with an eye on the future.

"We said all along we were not in the business of selling our better players," he continues, "and younger players have a real empathy for the club if they have come through the ranks. That is something we want to build the team around, we are not in the business of trying to make a quick buck, it’s about building and making sure we are strong at all levels. There’s also a clear path for everybody to see."

Bojinov's injuries were unrelated. Not sure if they are on the same leg. So his injury wasn't caused by the team rushing him.
