If the article is available through an internet source that does not require a log-in, it is in the public domain. As long as the source is cited, it is absolutely legal to use.

UK copyright laws are about 200 years old so I wouldn't count on it. However iirc Bluemoon is a USA hosted site and the M*rror would have to take action under US law as technically the alleged copyright infringement would have taken place inside United States jurisdiction.

U.S. Copyright laws are strict, compared to the UK. To be honest we get away with murder on here.

I've worked in the UK in newspapers for nearing 30 years mate and fully understand the law. Copyright of an image last for 70 years after the death of the photographer that has copyright to the image.The UK is strict with images. Check out the yougov guidelines.
