Breaking records/stats thread

By my reckoning we've beaten everyone, and done the double over 12 teams, with one team to go, I asked earlier in the thread if this was close to a PL record, anyone know ?

Those we didn't, 1 defeat against united, and liverpool, draws with everton, burnley, huddersfield and palace.

Could be wrong but I remember earlier in the season someone asking about the record for most doubles in a PL season and I believe it was 14. Could be wrong though

I can never understand why when records are discussed, the achievements of (say) the points total of the Liverpool team of the 70s is adjusted upwards to reflect the difference 3 points for a win will make but is not then adjusted again to reflect the fact that they played a 42 game season not a 38 game season. I understand that you are always going to record more points on the basis of 3 points for a win, and it makes sense to make an adjustment for that, but equally you are likely (as the champion team) to record more points if you have a longer season. The BBC for instance seem very keen to make the former adjustment, but not the latter.

I wonder why that is.
Because sports statisticians like to compare apples with apples - you can knock our points total down to 2 points for win if you like. Liverpool would be slighly better with that measure as we could only equal their 78-79 record by winning at Southampton. That's why win% and points% of the maximum points to take are preferred measures of all time greatness.

Haha that is a funny

If you are comparing Liverpool's record with ours, by adjusting their season to 3pts for a win, you would also have to discount 4 games and which are the one's out of the 42 games are you not going to count. So that their pts total is based on the 38 games that we play now. Not on the 42 games that were played then.

Regarding the goals record, i've just seen on WhoScored that we've scored:

77 goals from open play
15 goals from set pieces (have we scored any direct free kicks in the league this season? Really struggling to recall one)
6 penalties (this is remarkably low)
4 counter attacks
3 own goals

77 open play goals! A team truly built in Pep's image.

Incredible. Only Liverpool with 80 have scored more goals in total than we've scored from open play.

I wasn't that bothered about the 100 point thing, more interested in the points record. But now we are here hopefully we'll do it. I was just thinking today though how much more perfect exactly 100 points is than 101 or 102 .

I think you have to look at it as points per game to get a fair comparison

1978-79 Liverpool 68 points (P42 W30 D8 L4) 2pts = 68/42 = 1.62 & 3pts 98/42 = 2.33
2004-05 Chelsea 95 points (P38 W29 D8 L1) 2 pts = 66/38 = 1.74 & 3 pts 95/38 = 2.50
2017-18 City 97 points (P37 W31 D4 L2) 2 pts = 66/37 = 1.78 &3 pts 97/37 = 2.62

Ever if we lose on Sunday we will comfortably beat Liverpool for both records. Tie with Chelsea for 2pts but obvioulsy beat them for 3 pts.

Annoyingly Preston 1888/89 record will just beat us even if we win on Sunday (we needed 102 points to beat both records).

Preston 40 points (P22 W18 D4 L0) 2pts 40/22 = 1.82 & 3 pts 58/22 = 2.64
City 100 points (P38 W32 D4 L2) 2pts 68/38 = 1.79 & 3 pts 100/38 = 2.63

Add in winning 18 games on the run and there is pretty high certaintly that we will never see this again. It's a season for the ages. I think as time goes on we will get more credit as people realise that these records are truely exceptional.

After equaling Wolves record of 4 top-flight seasons scoring more than 100 goals, Manchester City probably now have more 100 goal seasons than anyone else with 7 (I think we already owned this one outright when we won the title in 2014).. Wolves have 5. Difficult to check all the lower league clubs though.
