Because sports statisticians like to compare apples with apples - you can knock our points total down to 2 points for win if you like. Liverpool would be slighly better with that measure as we could only equal their 78-79 record by winning at Southampton. That's why win% and points% of the maximum points to take are preferred measures of all time greatness.
My whole point is that it isn’t comparing apples with apples because one is a 42 game season and the other is a 38 game season. Converting out 3 points for a win into 2 points doesn’t address that difference it just replicates it.
How can that possibly be a like for like comparison? Wouldnt the true like for like comparison be to multiply Liverpool’s 1978 points total by 38/42? Or to multiply our points total by 42/38? A points percentage doesn’t really give a like for like comparison.
