Brentford (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

He’s a fantastic footballer, just not a LB. In fact, this season, Pep’s decision to play centre backs in the full back position has really cost us. Most goals we’re conceding are coming from the full back areas and yet we seem to going after more centre backs!
No doubt he’s a very good footballer but the problem is he doesn’t really look like a centre half either. We’re just about to bring 2 in and Dias will be back soon. Plus Stones would be there ahead of him if he was ever fit. In the unlikely event we ever have a fully fit defence this season against a good side i don’t think he’d start because Ake would be left back. Slightly worrying nearly 2 years in after paying £85m for the lad.

We simply can't control games anymore in the same manner, and Pep's style of football requires little room for error in possession otherwise it leaves you completely exposed, just by the very nature of how high we get up the pitch.

As I said on a thread last week, the signs were there last season despite getting over the line, but there was a period last season where every goal we conceded were almost identical to each other, when we couldn't defend after a turnover of possession.

Until we get some new legs and players who can start controlling a game again, these results will be the norm.
The glory days are gone, for now at least.

Lots I agree with but their equaliser was scored from a cross that should have been defended far better by Savinho. He was far too passive and not for the first time. We simply cannot allow the number of crosses that we concede every game.
Agree.

However they are also getting into those areas far too often..our defensive work in the midfield is woeful, especially when gundo came on. Kdb was great going forward but agsin awful defensively and was the cause of a number of their breakaways. Kovacic is working hard but he has no awareness of the second ball ...the list goes on...players unable to recover

If Pep insists playing Pep ball then he needs a new Ederson, Ortega is a great keeper but a car crash when it comes to distribution, he put us under pressure with some of his passing at the back and then when he kicked it forward he only occasionally found Haaland. I’m still fuming with that draw, the midfield offered zero protection to the defence once Kovacic went off, he wasn’t the best either tbh. I dont think unless we get at least 3 decent players in and one has to be a DM we will get top 4.

Dias and Ake are the only defenders who look like they take pride in their defending. They are the ones we see making those last ditch clearances/blocks/winning headers. Feel like the others think they are just extra midfielders who like being on the ball. Just shit defending again I’m not surprised at that stat which shows we are the worst at defending our box

Looking at Brentford's second goal again Ortega should have saved it. A bizarre attempt it looked easier to palm it away than palm it into the net.

For me the biggest problem is the desire to get back behind the ball from the midfield. Pep was all about if you don’t run you don’t play, well that has changed the desire to get back has gone. Phil, Doku, Savinho, I feel for the poor CM they just ain’t got the legs to do it the others have no excuse. We look like a PSG team who had Messi, Neymar and Mbappe m. We can call the defence all we want but it needs sorting and some either need a rocket or shipping on as it is not acceptable and not what City are about or was about. Once you give one the license it seems to creep in and it has not only crept in but it’s started to rot. I watched Kevin yesterday probably complete more sprints than Phil has all season.

There are some little quick fixes that would get us over the line and that's having mobile quick young players like Robinson from Fulham. We are so static at times

A defensive shambles
Sunday league defending. We need a real goalkeeper and two real fullbacks, not players out of position. How many times did the ball go into midfield with only Brentford players visible? We need a goalkeeper like that clown at Aston Villa who can actually save shots. Man U goalkeeper turned their match around v Arsenal. New kid from Lens can tackle maybe he can teach some of our present players. Oh for the days of Sane and Mahrez, wingers who could shoot on target.

He doesn't dominate his area ederson would punched that!

He had a fairly poor game by his usual standards. Passing was poor apart from to Haaland (which was decent), saved by Aké when in no-man's land and poor for the second
