Brentford (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Excellent 1st half performance. 2nd half got a bit nervy but we only really gave them one chance. City and Arsenal are the 2 best teams in the Premier League at the moment.

I know it's only seven games in but make no mistakes that was a huge three points today. It wasn't long ago Liverpool were eight points ahead of us and Arsenal five, now the gap is two and three, something probably none of us saw coming. Both teams will have looked at us this season, the key players we've lost and written us off. The way the table looks now has put a little bit of doubt into their minds which is a good thing.

We are very much a squad in transition. Nobody loses key players like De Bruyne, Gundogan, Walker and yes Ederson and doesn't struggle a bit, as we did so for a period last week against Burnley. At 1-1, I said this to the bloke next to me at the game. Somebody else took exception to this until I explained it to him. It wasn't a criticism. I was simply pointing out that as we settle new players in there will be periods in games we have to suffer. The second half today was a perfect example of that....but we won. Digging in and doing so will again lift the team. Brentford is a tough place to go, they are the modern day Stoke.

So seven games in the signs are promising. At times we look like the City of old, purring and totally dominating. Then, often in the same game we look what we are, a team trying to incorporate new players and gel. The one worry is the lack of goals from other players. We have scored fifteen. Haaland has nine of those and two were own goals. Others have to start doing their bit, especially our wingers.

I thought you guys should have been out of sight at half time, and then the typical Brentford 2nd half happened although apart from when their striker went through on goal they didn't look like scoring. Brentford are no mugs and 3 points there won't be for everyone. Haaland is amazing, the lad on your right wing I thought slowed your attack down.

Be within 5 points of the top by feb and anything is possible - plenty of serial winners of big trophies in that City sode who know what to do at the business end of a season.
Usual fair assessment.
We're still struggling to recover from/avoid injuries (Marmoush and Cherki could easily have made a difference today)
We're also painfully pedestrian this season. It's the way Pep has always played but when you're lacking a David Silva or KdB to pick passes it's a tough watch
Bobb on the right will get better - but the year he's missed has been a set back.
As you say - let's see where we're all at in Feb/March as no-one is pulling up trees yet

The one player who seems to be dividing opinion is Nico. Some saying he was solid and is improving and others thinking he's adding not much at all.

Strange how people can take totally different opinions away from the same match.

Everyone appears to agree on Savinho.

Nunes got away unblemished on the Matchday Thread.

I would love to see the stats of assists for goals from Eddie, versus goals that should have been saved. I loved Eddie, but not in the same league as Gigio in shot stopping.
Different keepers but his ball playing wasn't just about assists it was also about being a press resistant backline which allowed us to 'drop teams' more readily and maintain pressure. Must confess I was a little sceptical about Donna but delighted with him so far.

When I see these posts about how nobody should leave negative feedback about their team's performance, I always wonder what, say, the Newport County (bottom of League 2) forum must be like.
it's a lot more toxic than this forum :)
