Brentford (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

If you'd of told me after the Brighton game that we'd batter the scum, draw at Goons and Monaco away and win the others, not only would I of bitten your hand off, I'd of put salt n pepper on it and enjoyed it. Great last few weeks :)
i have to agree. The fact of the matter is, despite a few unpretty periods against Brentford, Arsenal and Napoli, the overall trajectory has been improvement across the whole season, which is what we want! Yes we probably need to be better to win the league or european cup, but that can come in time.

Lol, yeah, me too mate ...... I looked at those fixtures a few weeks back, weighed up the way we were playing, and absolutely feared the worst ..... to now find ourselves only three points adrift of Arsenal at the top of the league, and with four points in the CL, is very satisfying/welcoming .... and we're still in the Carabou Cup as a bonus!.

So fair play to the team for putting the work in ...

A drop off in performance as we usually get?

The difference this time being is we're not the City of the last few seasons. We're a new team in transition, so a degree of context, realism & understanding regarding our performances is required.
Usually? I thought, before last year we've been relentless from New Year on?

Pep, on the other hand, isn't in transition so can we all reserve the right to comment upon his substitutions and the timing of them?

Watched the first half then had to put my phone on flight mode as I was getting on a plane

After utterly dominating the first half and only scoring one, I fully expected to switch on my phone after landing to find we'd lost 2-1..... so that was a very pleasant surprise
I was at SCC Napoli watching KDB . Kept an eye on City on my phone and was fully expecting a late equaliser . Equally happy ..

Theirs been some improvement at the back, not sure if that's something to do with Pep Lijnders. Now all we need is someone to educate the team with toe pokes.

A "toe poke" in football (or soccer) is a technique where a player kicks the ball using the very front of their shoe, or toe, rather than the laces or instep. This method provides an element of surprise and can be effective in tight spaces or when a player has limited time to set up a traditional shot.

3 points, clean sheet

We let the game get away from us in the midfield but I think defensively we're looking more solid this year. Just need to be more clinical.

As an aside Refs need to get a grip on these long throws. It seems you can just take them where the fuck you want and apparently taking 30 secs getting a towel to dry the ball isn't wasting time but 20 secs looking for someone in space is a booking.
Spot on MSH, thought the same myself about them long throws!

My friend had his wallet searched as well by a young steward who had a bad attitude.

I was stood next to my friend as the steward took my friends wallet off him and began looking through his wallet.

Are stewards allowed to do this?

Surely they are not?

What the fuck is going on with football where no mark, gobby, teenagers, are allowed to look through people's wallets and private possession?
Went to court as a witness recently they took my wallet apart looking for those new metal credit cards..apparently the wronguns sharpen the edges and use them as a weapon so the bloke told me.

I am struggling to put my finger on it. It looked to me from the away end that we were reasonably competitive in the first half at Arsenal but then utterly swamped in midfield in the second half. Yesterday we were absolutely dominant first half (I believe it was the first time ever in the pl that Brentford had failed to manage a touch in the opponents penalty area in the first half) and that included half the first half without Rodri. But second half it felt like we were a hell of a lot less dominant in midfield and from the away end it felt like we were hanging on (the feeling wasn’t helped by the usual loud mouths shouting their negativity).

I am trying to get what the issue is. It’s definitely not Erling, he is better than ever. It’s not the defence, I thought we defended heroically at arsenal and brentford- Ruben was particularly good yesterday), so it feels like midfield is the issue and we are sometimes getting swamped there? Is it the personnel (I do think Reijnders is more an 8 or even a 10 on modern terms) and Phil is great on the ball but definitely more of a 10. Do we need an extra more defensively minded individual in midfield and if so who do we take out (personally I’d play Rodri (when fit) with Nicky G and Reijnders and Phil further forward. But are we missing more inverted fullback support in midfield as a way of getting more bodies into that area?

We’ve clearly got the best striker in the league and the best keeper in the league, the defence is looking a lot stronger and Khusanov and Ait Nouri to come back, I think if we can address the midfield issues another PL title is within our reach.
Definitely in certain away games a more defensive midfield.

He certainly isn't quick mate. I'd say the opposite. But he is doing ok and is better as a back up to Rodri than anyone else that we have. Good at winning duels and hope he continues to get better.
Clocked a top speed close to 21mph in a game, for contrast Van de Venn is around 23mph, he’s no slouch, and like I said he has a good burst of speed over the first 10yds

This one is for @Dodge. I went to Brentford yesterday with my youngest, fully aware of what the Brentford stewards are like after knowing of Dodge’s experiences and the repercussions. Despite this I was speaker to so rudely by one of the younger stewards at the entry (frisk) point that I reacted by asking why he thought he could talk to me like that. Despite having frisked me he told me (told not asked to empty my pockets), which I did and he asked me what was in my wallet - the “wallet” is a City one, literally tiny and credit card sized. He asked me what was in it - I told him (truthfully) that it was (a) my debit card (b) my bus pass and (c) my stroke association card (I had a stroke 4 months ago, and no not from mrs swales). He told me (aggressively) to take the cards out and show me inside (there is literally no room for anything other than these cards) and he had a look inside. I asked him what he expected to find inside - he said cocaine! I laughed and said I am a 66 year old retired accountant who is recovering from a stroke, and surely if I had cocaine one of the sniffer dogs would be all over me, stop being so stupid. At this another older steward came over and advised me that if I caused any more trouble (lol) I wouldn’t be going in. The way they spoke to me I wasn’t ready to accept however fortunately my occasionally sensible 16 year old son came over and said dad don’t say anything and just get into the ground. The older one said sarcastically at least your son has got sense, somewhat inflammatory given I’d done nothing wrong). I decided to agree with my lad and walk off. I have to say the stewards at the search point are twats who are looking to deliberately antagonise people (maybe not all of them but from several years experience many of them) and despite me knowing what they are like from what happened to Dodge I still fell for their antagonistic behaviour. Tbf I’ve never seen any issues from the stewards inside the ground, but beware of the cunts outside. Just to conclude, just after this I passed a sniffer dog, and safe to say it took no interest in my bus pass and stroke association card
@BringBackSwales

Really sorry you ran into the same steward as I did back in January. Like you said, it's difficult not to react when you're confronted by jumped up tossers, who delight in pushing the limits of your patience to get a reaction, whether that be at the gate or clearing an aisle with a gratuitous shove in the back.

As I've mentioned before, the parting words of the steward responsible for my arrest were "enjoy your banning order", which tells you all you need to know about the shithousery of the twat and his knowledge of the consequences for daring to stand up for yourself.

As blokes of a similar generation, maybe we suffer fools less than others. Maybe, being brought up in less draconian times, our threshold is lower. Maybe, expecting to be treated with due respect as a visiting supporter is now consigned to the past.

I've had many conversations with the FSA about stewarding and whilst a complaint can be raised, nothing will be achieved by doing so. All Clubs have a supporters charter, which is littered with caveats and limitations, most of which are geared to protect the Club, not the supporter. Drafted and manipulated by faceless Supporter Compliance committees at each and every PL club. All very similar and protected by the same legal framework. The independent governance of the PL is being brought in to give greater protection to fans, hold Clubs to account and restore some semblance of balance. One of the many reasons the PL are so against the regulator being imposed upon them.

It's my understanding that stewards have no legal right to search a wallet, only the Police can do this. Even then, they have to due process and have to show reasonable cause to do so. Simple Police profiling would suggest a 66 year old man attending with his son, would not be meet the threshold. That being said, football supporters attending an away fixture are treated very differently to the general public, so the rule book gets thrown out of the window.

There's a video doing the rounds of a free for all at Brentford, from a cup match last year against Orient. Full on fight with the stewards, a black guy with dreads front and centre, wading in to away fans, going full Danny Dyer. Draw your own conclusions as to the level of passive crowd control on show.

Take care pal.

sorry mate but its a very shit post about everything but our argument. Wtf you talking about? Its not about reception of "negative feedback". Guy literally wrote a total bollocks, radically and totally misrepresenting the view of specifically first half of the game, against your own team interest, got burned for it and you here about freedom of speach and so on? just shut up please
Only just seen this - funny how you consider the other poster disagreeing with you as talking bollocks, but that you disagreeing with him means that he 'got burned' for it!

You might want to rein in your own feelings of self-importance?

yeah, because he said we been awful whole game. So hes either stupid or lying. I assume theres no point in lying about entertainment and to mock your own team, so there we are
I was specifically referring to your point (assuming that I'm deciphering it properly) - the idiotic belief that you can't support a team and be unhappy with some aspect of their performance.

Could you genuinely not see that?
