Bring the Noise

The annual report has got some interesting info in it re City's supporters:

  • 130,000 unique supporters attended home areas of the Etihad last season.
  • Of Premier League clubs, City fans are the most likely to bring children with them.
  • Match-going City fans have on average been going to games for 20.3 years (3rd highest in the Premier League).
The average length of time City fans have been going to games seems to contradict the number of new fans (our crowds have shot up over the years), but perhaps the explanation is that these new fans have always been fans, they just didn't go all the time. I do like the idea that City's fanbase is still one of the most loyal around despite all the changes at the club.

I might be wrong but regarding the South stand noise, I thought their attempts on Tuesday night were great. It was a non-stop effort. Thank you. I reckon for a different game, a lot more will join in.

Out of interest, who are #1 and 2 for longer average years attending?

A good 700 fans in the Singing Section chanted “what the fucking hell is that?” at the drum on Tuesday. It’s not just people away from SSL1 who don’t want a drum.

the same 'singing section' who most games sing nothing at all. all a lot of those fans want to do is throw v signs at the away fans. they think they are too cool to sing, poznan, wave flags, basically do anything support wise. the traditional atmosphere that you talk about, rarely exists now at city and something different has to be done. 2 games a season of great noise is shocking.

we all want the same thing on there, but i think the idea that we can regularly recreate noise levels of the past isnt going to happen. two big games this season already (chelsea and spurs) and both were really bad in my opinion.

bring your drum against united mate ;)

no, they sing the Dzeko song for god knows what reason.

700??

That would be 1 and a 1/2 blocks. Sorry, but I didn’t hear that chant. I was in 116 throughout the game.

I heard a few remarks and shouts, and a couple of light hearted banter shouts, but that was it.

It’s obvious the drum isn’t liked, even though some people on here have asked us to use it again.

Unfortunately it’s hard to get a person who can drum properly, in time with the chants, and who doesn’t drum it to death.

I know its hard to move and we are in the habit of sitting / standing where we are. But if we don't try our best and move it wont work.

As it stands we sing from three areas mainly, kind of jack of all trades master of non, we struggle to make one decent group of singers out of the three.

If we can get 50% of kippax singers / 50% of SS3 singers and who ever else from the rest of the stands in 114 / 115 we will make a right din.

Due to ticket availability 114 / 115 is the only place we can group, also it is the best place for displays / flags.

Begging folk to try their best and consider a move, if we don't then this thread will reach 5,000 posts and still the same old chat in 3 years time.

Once we group and sing very loud from 115 it will travel and be a platform for those in SS3 and all over to join in. The odd game "bluemoon" belts out and echo's round the stadium, makes hairs on the back of your neck stand up. We could be like that every game.
Well done 1894. Keep up the good work. For the next CL game I’ll relocate from 111 to 115.

was very good banter when some people sang "wtf hell is that", all in good humour because the same fans where taking the megaphone quite well, the odd few looked disgruntled. Good come back from Jrb was "SS give us a song" fantasic.

The people complaining about the megaphone etc. are mostly not in the singing section and don't want to move , so they aren't doing a lot to improve the atmosphere while also hampering other peoples efforts to improve it.

Tradition can't last for ever, especially if it is not working. Please join the efforts of 1894 and everyone else trying to improve the atmosphere. Lots of teams have better atmospheres than us in Europe and that is what the team is going to hear during games. It don't matter to them if it started "organically", they are hearing supporters supporting them, which is the most we can do. So we can achieve that by changing or go to football games like watching a movie and come back .

Still haven't got a response for this but : are we allowed to have the flags up during the game?

sorry mate, replied but it probably got lost in the discussion about the bras band ! haha

we can only drop banners for around 4 or 5 minutes as the players come out. We cant cover up any advertising boards especially the electronic ones, its sponsors rules. If it was up to me they would be there all season. Tier three we can hang banners, just need more fans u there that will put them up and take them down match by match.

Thank you very much for all the support, we could almost start a "singing sections singing section" the way things are going :)

I'm only explaining why I haven't joined you in 115. I've watched every single game in the 'new' stadium from the same seat and I'll only move it the club price me out by turning it corporate, or we get a safe standing wall in the North stand (if ever).

In the meantime I'll support you by joining in from 105 as often as possible.

Was my suggestion for clearing out the non-singers in 115 (leaflet and priority during relocation) a complete non-starter?

Sorry late reply, not so often I get on BM at night time, im busy with drum practise ( joking ).

That's a good call with the leaflets, one of a few good ways we can make fans aware.

Fuck me, if it was 700 fans then it must've been the quietest lot of 700 fans I've ever heard! I reckon if you divide that 700 by 10 and then halve that, you'll have a more accurate figure.

On a more serious note, no doubt the drum is divisive but feedback on the megaphone has been more positive. My own thinking is that more people will join in with a megaphone than a drum.

I was going to shout over to the Kippax to “give us a song”, but it wasn’t the right match to do that. :-)

I think the Ultras route is the way to go.

I’m from up north and the scene has really taken off in Glasgow with the Green Brigade and the Union Bears. Regular fan marches and proper organised fan displays funded by the supporters. About 12/13 years ago when these groups started, they were looked on as embarrassments, fast forward to now and they lead their respective supports vocally home and away, front and centre.

The Celtic board have really helped the GB even though they have regular disagreements. Along with the Union Bears at Rangers who have completely grown out of their section. 2300 other season ticket holders put their name forward for a safe standing section, but the board are being scared into what it might grow into. So they’re reluctantly holding back.

And for those against the drum and the megaphone, it works all round Europe, why can’t it work at Man City? There needs to be a more positive mindset.

Get involved folks! You could look back in 20 years and say that’s what I helped create. I know if I was down South I’d be getting involved. Once a there is a proper assembly of like minded people, the youth will come and keep filtering through. It happens all round Europe.

That is absolutely bang on, need to print that out and hang it all over south stand / kippax.

Thanks for posting that. Lead from the front and centre, worth listening to that.

To be fair i miss the banter between the SS and kippax corner. I remember games where we just sang and took the piss out of each other...

agree. I would love that vibe back. Away fans didn’t know how to respond either. Think it would be a good way to get the atmosphere back.
