Budgetamania 2018

Just a reminder that the tax cuts for higher earners are reduced by about 50% through increases in National insurance contributions.
#Tories increasing borrowing to reduce taxes.

It’s never what it seems in the headlines.

Nope, never. But then a couple of budgets ago when they reduced the tax free portion of share dividends, the headlines were full of talk about it being a modest tax rise on billionaire share holders - none of them even noticed it was a swingeing tax rise on small businesses.

I quite liked the Lib Dems idea of a penny on everyone's income tax going to the NHS. Would gladly do the same for our schools.

Of course, I'd also like it if the Liberal Democrats respected our democratic decision to leave the EU.

1p will not make a difference. 1p multiplied by the number in work is something like £350k-£450k a month, Aguero earns more than that.

To do it through tax it needs to be £10-£30 a month to really make a difference.

There are relatively few billionaires but lots of small businesses. Win, win for the government.
I personally think the tax breaks for higher rate, even as a previously higher rate payer myself, were not needed. Money for public services is needed.

Tax revenue patterns are extraordinarily complex though. It isn't simply a case of losing that tax revenue, because if people spend the additional money they get, the multiplier effect ought to come in, plus the government takes tax on VAT on that spending and so on. It's why some tax cuts can bring in more government revenue. Now I'm not saying that's the case here, but it might be - if you increase the economic activity, the government wins.
