Budgetamania 2018

I’d suggest in terms of education money has been wasted on free schools. One near us is tiny and wasn’t needed. Don’t levy schools for apprenticeships unless they are actually going to use it.
I agree we have decisions to make as a country.

They are a way for the middle classes to have a grammar school where they want one and for the chattering classes like Toby Young to get involved in implementing government policy ( but not sending your own kids there of course ) and are another example of a doctrinal approach introducing privatisation at whatever cost to the tax payer as was done with rail.

I loved his tactics of saying he's been inundated by calls from {insert profession} since the budget to back up his policies.

Probably from those who will soon not be paying income tax. To put that into context according to the IFS the increase in the personal threshold will mean 40% of adults no longer paying income tax. 40% ! Think about it - 40% earning £12,500 pa or less - of those that are working most will be on some form of in-work benefits - how is that making work pay and how long is that position sustainable and how long will it sustain the economies position of 5th or 6th in the world? Growth was revised down yesterday by Phil.............

Quoting that 40% figure is way too simplistic. Some people choose to work part-time as it's a second income for the household and is convenient for them. Some people are getting back to work after a long break and need benefits to top up their earnings while they gain experience. All sorts of reasons. Not saying it's not an indicator of a problem, just saying you need to break it down further.

It’s an election budget. Bringing forward goodies, ditching the whole ‘deficit must be reduced as it imperils the nation’ to ‘here have some money’. Also banks the Withdrawal Agreement and Transition as a done deal with Tories going to the country after March 2019. Labour want the election as well so they’ll vote for it.

Tories and Labour will also vote for the Withdrawal Agreement inc NI backstop and Customs Union over ERG/DUP objections.

Much like Gove asking people to get their stuff from the tip. Bet he doesn’t! The thing is if you are an outstanding school(no matter how long it was since your last inspection) there is more money available. Schools that are requiring improvement and often in dire need of money for infrastructure, buildings, staffing or whatever won’t get a sniff.

sure - and some will be retired etc etc - the point being that with so many being on such a low income how does the economy sustain itself? Its said you need 2 people in work and paying tax to also support each pensioner - if those workers are on low pay and paying little tax and perhaps even be already taking back out of the pot in the guise of in-work benefits. Its part of a gloomy outlook warning from the IFS.

Of course not - as Phil put it this is a one off gesture to allow schools to buy "those little extra's" - like they only need money to buy flowers and chocolates FFS.
