The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life
This was Goffman’s first and most famous book. It was also the first book to treat face-to-face interaction as a subject to study in the sociological aspect. This book received the American Sociological Association’s MacIver award in 1961. Goffman treated this book as a kind of report in which he frames out the theatrical performance that applies to face-to-face interactions. He believed that when an individual comes in contact with other people, that individual will attempt to control or guide the impression that others might make of him by changing or fixing his or her setting, appearance and manner. At the same time, the person that the individual is interacting with is trying to form and obtain information about the individual.[3] Goffman also believed that all participants in social interactions are engaged in certain practices to avoid being embarrassed or embarrassing others. This led to Goffman’s dramaturgical analysis. Goffman saw a connection between the kinds of acts that people put on in their daily life and theatrical performances. In social interaction, like in theatrical performance there is a front region where the “actors” (individuals) are on stage in front of the audiences. This is where positive aspect of the idea of self and desired impressions are highlighted. There is a back region or stage which can also be considered as a hidden or private place where the individual can be themselves and get rid of their role or identity in society.[4]

This is derived from Erving Goffman............. the best example i can give you is the comparison of lets say a child in the classroom, the teacher is conveying the subject, be it maths. english whatever, the child in the front row is nodding his head, displaying the bodies exterior to be listening and taking the subject in as to display a characteristic which is one that understands........ in laymans terms the boys head is always elsewhere but convinces its audience otherwise. A leading Psychologist from Oxford University was given the task of surveying both at the time and categorically stated in his report that Venables displayed contempt for the crime in a way he'd never seen in his 30 years of practice, evaluating that he was not only the domineering of the two but also the catalyst.

Zin, you clearly have an immense knowledge on this subject. Do you know if any of those family members ever faced charges for the abuse of Venables and Thompson ?

I read a lot about the case at the time but I never remember that detail coming out. Maybe I have just forgotten it. My eldest son was 2 at the time of the Bulger murder and like a lot of parents I selfishly thought of what if that was my lad. Having a son the same age just seemed to bring it closer to home. Thankfully my lad is 19 now and has been brought up in a loving family, something that Jamie Bulger deserved and was tragically denied.

I was not stating that this was a fact merely contemporary opinion at the time; though as my cynical self inferred I doubt it to be true- I can only discuss the second hand evidence and analysis I have read- I don't state it as a fact.
