I think Bayern started with their best 11 with the exception of Dante for Martinez. Martinez still does not convince as a centre back and is constantly caught out by the ball over the top. He cannot play there against the top teams. Pep needs some consistency in his selection now so that the team can find top form for the knock out stages. They need to become familiar in constant positions and playing alongside each other. Mainz were very good today and should have gone in at half time up. Bayern passed the ball too slowly, except for Kroos. In the end Pep made the right decision. Gotze's clever position really started to change the game. They also needed to do what Schweinsteiger did for his goal and make more runs into the box. Seems like they will win the league on Tuesday.

Yet Bayern have never lost a Bundesliga game that Javi has started (35 wins, 3 draws), I thought he had a decent game yesterday.

They were 5th going into yesterday's game and were at home. They were hardly cannon fodder.
A pointless stat so why do you even quote it? It looks flashy if someone had no knowledge about Bayern. Martinez first of all has started most of his games in midfield during that run so it has no bearing for what he has done in defence. Secondly Bayern have lost just 1 game in the last two years in the Bundeliga whether Martinez has played or not and are currently on a 50 match winning streak. So how is that stat relevant in the slightest?

I think Martinez gets used to the position in defense. The first matches he was still not really fit and after playing in another role for a year he now seems to adapt better and better. At the beginning he had a too low speed but recently he got back into shape.

About the statistics - I do not think it was too important who played in the last lost match or not as we since then had so much matches always in different formations with different players that we have not lost. The only guy that is really missing sometimes is Ribery - but that is just because nobody really can play the left wing as well as he can.

What I think is a little difficult - but somehow just a question of some days/weeks is that both Ribery and Robben are not totally hundred percent after their injuries. The big clashes will come in a month or two.

If Schalke sign anyone in the summer then they need to make sure it is Tuchel.

The contracts of Jens Keller and Thomas Tuchel end in 2015. Maybe there is a something going on in this direction then.

I really like Christian Streich and Thomas Tuchel as managers. Freiburg were great to watch on Friday.
It's a shame that we only have Leverkusen v Hoffenheim on TV over here today, as I imagine Nürnberg v Eintracht will. Be the "more entertaining" game. If Nürnberg win today, Veh and Frankfurt will be in serious trouble.

A year is a long time and too long to wait. Schalke have this fantastic generation of young players at the moment. Even if Draxler decides to leave it is going to require wise planning to spend the 30 million pounds or so he will go for. I would like to see Tuchel get his hands on this Schalke team and see what he can do with it. Liverpool may have Suarez, but for me the Schalke team has more quality and look at what Rodgers is doing with them,

-- Sun Mar 23, 2014 3:56 pm --

It might be a case of Martinez just getting used to the positions. However his lack of pace and positioning suggest it's more than that to me. Personally I think now Bayern need to have consistency and stop with the rotations. Pep should be aware of his best team and formation and needs to play them into form. It's hard to see United troubling Bayer, but the semi finals will be a different matter and Dortmund might have some players back for a cup final.

Bayern's depth is unbelievable, almost too much in my opinion.

Presumably when Pep realises this he will bow to your obviously superior reading of the game. Until then we will just have to muddle along losing the odd game in 50.

That's absolute crap. Guardiola rotates as he sees fit as did Heynckes, neither of them seem to do so badly when doing so. You really do seem to think you have more idea how to do the job than Pep does. Yesterday he once again got the substitutions exactly right too.

Which is exactly why he can rotate the side so successfully, in anycase you can't keep a full squad of top players happy if some of them never get a game.

You seem to take every criticism of Bayern personally and take a very short sighted view of what is success. You have already said you don't care if the other Bundesliga teams collapse, not taking into account the effect this would have on Bayern.

You don't bother to analyse or given any opinions on Bayern, but simply keep stating everything is perfect. The manager is perfect and he makes no mistakes.

You need to rotate, but I am not the only one to bring up the problem Bayern have with the fluency of their play. He too has frequently brought up that Bayern despite winning are not quite as strong as they were last year and they lack the fluidity in their play. Players need to play consistently to form the partnerships. Chelsea putting 6 past Arsenal should put into context Bayern's own performance against them.

Pep won the champions league with Mascherano at the back, but that does not mean it was a good idea and did not leave them exposed.

Not at all, I'm as critical as anyone when necessary but often seem to be watching a different team to you. Almost every post is negative, to read your rambling and confused prose one would never imagine you were talking about a team that is about to win the league, breaks records on a weekly basis, is in the cup semi final, the CL quarter finals and the bookies favourite to win it, has nine of the top ten rated bundesliga players currently.
Reading most of your posts you make them sound like Scunthorpe. Of course there is room for improvement but your views on the likes of Martinez and Thiago are ludicrous, one of the reasons Heynckes bought him was his ability to play several positions, likewise Lahm's flexibility is equally useful.
Chelsea scoring 6 against Arsenal is irrelevant, Bayern put 7 past Barcelona yet lost to Borisov yet you surely wouldn't claim Borisov are a better side. There are always things to criticise but you rarely find any positives, almost all the big names in Germany would disagree with you, the pundits and the board are absolutely convinced by Pep, he has won the league in his first season anything else is a bonus. Yes we want to defend the CL but if we don't the world won't end.

Edit: I'm just reading an interview with Rummenigge in TZ, he says "Pep is a genius, I've experienced many trainers but he is the best I've ever seen. He has lifted the team to an even higher level than before".

Negative is relative. Last year when lots of Germany were questioning how strong the Bayern team really were I was saying they were the strongest team club side I have ever seen. The collection of players Bayern have at their disposal is unmatched by any club. Not even Madrid have such a collection of players: Lahm, Alaba, Ribery, Neuer and Schweinsteiger are the best in the world in their position. Robben and Muller are arguably the best wide right players in the world. Martinez is arguably the best defensive midfielder in the world. Then you have the likes of Gotze, Thiago etc.

Guardiola has brought an added consistency, but at the same time the team has not reached the heights of last year.

The Arsenal game is not about taking one game and comparing things. I never took notice about the game against Borisov, because it was a blip much like the draw against Leverkusen. The flaws in the current Bayern team are not mentioned by myself alone. Last year there was no weakness and just no way to defeat Bayern. All you could hope is that they had an off day.

Why do you think Wenger, after losing with a more convincing score line this time said the team was weaker.
http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/vi ... =5;sport=3 Listen from 17 minutes in where he talks about Bayern.

The quality of the Bayern team means that they can win no matter what system they play. Bayern could probably get away with playing Muller in goal. At this level the real test will come when they meet teams of similar quality in the CL.

Bayern could still win the treble this year and they are no doubt the strongest squad in the world.
