Burnley (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Clearly nerves got to some of the younger players that’s why we need Rodri back, Gonzalez should’ve started with OReilly at left back, it’s clear Ait Noiri can’t do that job of moving forward he is better going down the wing and crossing in, something he didn’t do all night even though it was screaming for the overlap. Hopefully nerves get to Arsenal now but it’s going to be tight this run in or goal difference won’t mean a thing as one team drops points.

If beating Arsenal at Wembley, putting 4 past Liverpool in a must win game for both sides (to stay in the cup), 3 past Chelsea away then beating Arsenal again in a match that would have probably put them in an uncatchable position if they had won, then coming through a match against a team that had to win to avoid relegation, and throughout all of that only conceding one "fluke" goal isn't flying then I don't know what is.

The expectation levels of some of you from a team nobody gave a prayer of even catching Arsenal a month ago is fucking absurd.

Reading some of these posts anyone not knowing the score would think we had lost, not just gone top for the first time in over 6 months.

Take a look at Arsenal's results since 1 March. Nearly two months of results, and they have not scored a hatful in that time, against anyone. When they've won — which is far from all the time — they have won by one goal, or a maximum of two.
Hell, against Sporting, who were generally considered to be the weakest of the quarter-finalists, they scored a goal in the 91st minute, and that was it. Over 180 minutes+ of football. They simply don't have a lot of penetration up front, and especially not without Saka. They are a good team, very sound, but I think that's been their weakness from the start of the season. And we saw it in their two recent games against us, where at Wembley they offered very little threat after the first fifteen minutes, and in the more recent game at the Etihad, they offered a lot more, for sure, but we basically scored for them. I expect them to beat Newcastle, but I'll be annoyed — and surprised — if they win by more than two.
My worry about the Burnley game is not so much them, it's more that Burnley will likely be on the beach. But those end-of-season games are weird. They sure as hell weren't on the beach last night. We now have eleven days off from the PL, and it is a very good thing. They'll probably be six points ahead again, and so? Reset. Go again. Rodri probably back. (Rotate a bit against Southampton, while taking them very seriously. They are not charlies, they're on a good run).
We can be dissatisfied about certain aspects of last night, while recognising that the guys were still coming down from Sunday's effort. We weren't winning the league on Sunday, nor last night. Steady as she goes. Everything's still on.

They had real chances to equalise in the first half as well.

We did more than enough to win and tbh, I think there was probably a bit of an adrenaline dump after Sunday. Doubt we'll play the same way again
 
Was at the game last night thought we tried everything to score a second goal. Finishing was all that was missing. Haaland and NOR uncharacteristically missed sitters. Great away end, which the players definitely seemed to appreciate. Knew I shouldn't have bothered reading the majority of this thread. Really depressing me this morning after the highs of last night
 
Top of the league, breathe it in.

Excellent result, all part of the process. I can't lie, I was a tad frustrated at some of the finishing and quite concerned at how many balls Burnley simply lobbed in between Khusa and Nunes for good chances, but now is about results, win win win.

There'll be rotation for the FA Cup and then we'll see if Pep is tempted to bring in Gonzalez into midfield for the league, as I thought O'Reilly struggled there (Rodri pending, might be a moot point).

We seem to be better against the superior sides. Maybe it's psychological.

It's HUGE challenge for Arsenal based on their form, not just recent but for the past 2-3 months. They've scraped several wins, late goals at Everton against the run of play, laboured in all their CL matches, only just scraped past Mansfield in the FAC, lost a 2-goal lead at Wolves.

They then had several chances to show the world they are the still team to beat then one after the other failed them miserably. Lost to us in the Carabau final, then lost to Championship side Southampton in the FAC, lost at home to Bournemouth, then lost their chance to effectively seal the title against us on Sunday.

Their season is all but in tatters and their confidence must be on the floor. They're two matches away from potentially winning nothing at all, one more PL defeat and a loss they can't overturn in the CL all but finishes them off. Tonight, losing the lead after being on top for all that time was yet another punch to the gut, make no mistake, and it's going to be some comeback to win their remaining 5 in the midst of two tough CL matches v Atletico, a comeback I don't think they're capable of even in their prime.

Yep. Every season there's an expectation they might get over the line, but find the right mentality. But like previous campaigns they've had a poor run over a couple of months and left the door open.

That will hurt. Their fans are also now probably expecting them to finish second, the atmosphere in the stadium isn't going to be easy to manage either.

This weekend is a huge test for them, as will the Fulham and West Ham games after tough CL ties.

Whilst we didn't get the goals we wanted last night, when we go to Everton they only have three games left and the situation then may be completely different.
 
Away fans were loud and in good voice all match - good stuff.
That rain kit is rubbish - on a very green pitch it just fades away and it was a real struggle to watch (not helped by a long day, glass of wine and comfy chair!)
Anyway - for the bits I did managed to watch - very frustrating. But hey ho - top of the league as it comes towards the month when it matters - all good.
 
Pep shoehorned Ait Nori in when it wasn't really necessary to do so. Rodders out injured, so simply replace him with Nico G. Why he felt the need to change the balance of the side by moving O'Rielly into midfield seemed a strange decision.

Anyhoo, 1-0 to the Old Sky Blues.
 
These lot aren’t confident after our win. They don’t think they’ll win 5 in a row and still don’t think they score enough.

Newcastle have fallen apart. Arsenal will beat them, let's not kid ourselves. Fulham too, likely. We will go into the Everton game 6 and a few goals behind. Just have to keep winning game by game, and wait for it to ramp up. They have West Ham next, which could then be the one that has them crack.
