Burnley (A) Post-Match Thread

Is the last league cup game we lost outside of Manchester back in 2010 at West Brom? Don’t recall us losing elsewhere since.

Mahrez is an absolute waste of space, doesn't track back, has no pace and only passes if there's no way he can shoot. What pep sees in him is baffling, and too think we let go sane is just incredible
When you play with 3 forwards and build up from midfield to final third ,all three can't be in the same space,on one of them has play deeper.Ideally all 3 should be flexible and interchange position-liverpool forwards do this well and also barca with suarez, neymar and messi used to do this well, but in our team sterling plays higher with the 9 and good combinational play isn't there. But agree with the larger point about mahrez,he is not in leicester city anymore where he had free role with more freedom. needs to improve

i enjoyed the game, i thought we looked quite good without being blistering. Burnley have real problems.

Torres was great, i thought his early link ups with Sterling showed great promise. lovely turn of pace too. Palmer was great as well, for a very young lad on his debut in a central role, i thought he showed good maturity.

overall a better display, which is all you want after having your pants pulled down by Brendan Fucking Rodgers.

Probably will end up as another nobody else wants. Not sure Sane would have stayed but there was also Sancho who imo should have been fast tracked into the team would have been no need for Mahrez at all. Again I think his best position is probably more central but in our team that woyld only mean getting in the way of Kev. Good player on his day but rarely makes a big impact.

I think Mahrez probably still plays football the way he played with his mates when he was a kid and, if he hasn't controlled that by now, never will. Dont get me wrong, he is capable of moments of brilliance, but not really a team player.
I though the ref did ok until the last 20 mins, when we were all pissed off with Dyche constant appealing and swearing, and decided the game was over so would give them a few decisions to shut him up.

Played a crowd noise video from youtube to make the stream watchable as all I called here was Dyche complaining.

Much better than last weekend. Torres looked really promising when played on the left.

Thought Mahrez was poor. Maybe not match fit.

Mahrez just doesn't fit our style of play, simple as. The individualistic nature of his game doesn't produce enough goals to indulge him. It was one thing when the rags were indulging a greedy Ronaldo, he was getting them 30-40 goals a season and winning games on his own. Mahrez will never do that. A really strange signing.

Enjoyed the game and glad we played so quickly to get the leicester game out of our system. So much better with Laporte in that back 4. Mendy did ok. Looks a better player for games like this rather than against players who love to get in behind.

Much needed positives after the debacle of the weekend. With Laporte Ake and the new lad Diaz all available for selection the defense might finally start to look half decent.

Good to see Sterling get a couple the second a nice finish but it was against average opposition and as per chances were missed. I thought the Torres goal was an exquisite finish, clinical and confident. Sterling got an almost identical chance and the keeper saved well but quite comfortably.

Lets see what the weekend brings.

Why not?

There are only four trophies that we can win, and the League Cup is one of them.

For 35 years, our victory in 1976 was all we old fuckers had to cling onto, though Dennis Tueart's overhead effort was a bit special.

And if we win it this season, we will equal Littlewoods' record of four in a row and their total number of League Cup successes.

I hate this arrogance among certain City fans that somehow the League Cup is below us, and we should just give up on it. It makes them sound like Klippety.
Well said Vienna,
I’d also add, we are at the start of a season, where we’ve had no preseason preparation (most other clubs had already played 3 friendly games before we‘d even reported back) there were International break/games the week we reported back.
so the only way to get the team/squad fit, is to take games like these very serious. This should help up going forward.

I didn't see the game and I haven't yet had time to watch the full match on City+. All I've seen is the the highlights on the OS, so I'd welcome comments to get a clearer picture of our performance.

Burnley are clearly struggling and are no Leicester City anyway. Vardy is miles better than anyone Burnley have and with Laporte there the danger of our highline being exploited was minimal. In fact it looked as though Burnley's backline was far too high and KdB was able to put Sterling and Torres through almost at will. They certainly weren't playing 5 across the back like Leicester did?

The 7 minutes of highlights I saw suggested that Mendy was far better than for some considerable time. For a start he was actually running with energy and purpose rather than the ambling lump of Sunday and his passing was forward rather than 15 yards backwards after a 10 yard forward lumber.

The result was a relief after Sunday and the performance showed just how good we can be but I thinke we have to see us against a good counter attacking team to see how our midfield copes with opposition breaks.
