Asda were doing a Polaroid 50" LED for around £350 last week. Looked great value.
They are piss poor, stick with Panasonic,lg or Samsung, was talking to a bloke a while back who worked for curry's told me to avoid Sony they have other companies making their TV's and so on, as they are solely concentrating on the PlayStation...

rule No 1

dont believe anything a bloke from Curry's says
True, but he wasn't one of their sales staff, who mostly know fcuk all....

I paid £800 for a 37" Samsung that was only 720p. Within about a year prices had really come down. Good job too, because it lasted under 3 years before conking out.
Current one is a 42" LG that is full HD and was under £300. We've had it about 4 years and because there's usually someone in our house awake, its probably on about 24 hours a day. It goes weeks without being switched off and so far hasn't missed a beat.

Looking to buy a new TV and I'm not much of a techie.

LED, 4K, HD, UHD, SmartTV. LG, Samsung, Sony. No idea!

Our budget is £1000 - £1200. Can anyone who knows what they're talking about offer any advice?

Are LG a decent make?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, 48 - 50 inch.

You can get value with a 50" as its not a popular size. Go for a 3D (you won't use it but the image is sharper) Full HD Smart internet /built in Freesat and free view. Good long warranty

Sounds like this one m8

In quality terms, you have HD ready which is 720p (cheap), 1080p(FullHD, more expensive) and 4k (very expensive). This all just relates to the amount of pixels your TV can show. The more pixels the better quality picture. Your best bet is to match your TV to the maximum your devices can use, most like Sky,Xbox,PS4 etc support full-hd(1080p) and not many really so far support 4k. Beware of TV's that say HD ready, they are NOT full HD, they are called HD Ready really because they simply allow you to connect HD devices to the TV like an Xbox or your Sky box. They are not proper HD televisions but are just able to accept HD inputs hence HD Ready.

I would ignore 4K(UltraHD) TV's for now because they are ridiculously expensive and there are zero 4k inputs available apart from the odd Youtube video. I think Xbox One and PS4 may support it but still your going to be paying massively over the odds just for that because nothing else really does. If you for example have SkyHD, Sky send their programs in HD format, not 4K so you are losing out because Sky don't support it. It amazes me how many people too have certain Freeview boxes with a full HD TV yet don't realize the Freeview box is actually limited to 720p. So they can't run their television at it's maximum capability.

A SmartTV is just a TV that can go online, as well as your standard programs you also get apps that will let you go onto Youtube, Facebook and stuff like Netflix so you can stream movies over the net onto your TV. If you don't need any of that and/or don't have a really fast internet than a SmartTV is pretty pointless too. It may also have fancy things like gestures which allows you to throw your arm about or whatever to change channel, not really important if you ask me. Some also come with 3D which allows certain channels to be viewed in 3D with glasses, again though each to their own and it will bump up the price but you probably won't ever use it.

That's pretty much a quick explanation. If you have Sky and Sky HD then a bog standard, biggest size full HD TV will be fine. If you do not use Youtube, Facebook or any online streaming things like Netflix, you do not need a SmartTV either.

Most of the big makes you mentioned are fine, I would stay away from non-descript names as most of them don't actually exist but are spinoff's of companies in god knows where making cheap sets to sell over here. Most of these types you will see are in supermarkets, brands such as Technika, Luxor etc don't actually exist as a brand, they are just rebranded, cheaply made crap made for the supermarkets and put under a fake brand to look better.

With your price range you could easily push for something bigger, say 55" even but it depends what you value most. You can get a really decent Samsung 48" for around £500, given you two links here, one is 48" for £529 and another 55" for £999. You could probably get them cheaper too shopping around. If you opt for the extras like 3D, SmartTV etc then the price will go up, most of the bigger size ones usually come with them anyway.
