Callum Doyle

quite the game for you then.
Went well. We were sat directly behind the net in which all three Sheff W goals were scored. Felt awful for my mate who’s birthday it was (this was his first Norwich game in many years as we don’t live anywhere near the stadium) but I have to admit the food, entry process and cleanliness were miles better than almost any other EFL stadium I’ve been to. That twelve minutes where they conceded three, however, was one of the roughest twelve minute periods of my life.

There was a group of about eight kids behind us however (maybe 11-13 years old) decked out in Norwich kits and gear. They only knew Duffy and Sargent (referred to all the other players by shirt number only) but they were very funny. That lightened the mood a bit.

I took my nieces and nephew to the last too city FA cup games, they shouted 'Hi Jack' at every corner taker regardless if they were Grealish or not (we were also miles away from being heard). Kids at game can be fun for a laugh sometimes.

how did the city lads get on/look?

I thought Doyle was fine; he played a really good pass for the first goal but of course he was a part of a defence that shipped three in twelve minutes.

I really cannot comment on Wright. We had seats literally five yards from the goal (I am also in horrendous denial about my obvious sight problems) and so it was really difficult to know what he was up to.

Doyle probably needs another loan but this time one that stretches him further, so ideally to a side in the top tier. The goal conceded yesterday (7.20) rather showed up some of his current drawbacks. He should have wiped out Salech in midfield and taken the booking but then struggled to get back at pace to cover, left him to Wright, who himself isn’t quick, and then was too late to catch him and clumsily conceded the penalty. Harsh, I know, but in microcosm and for the purposes of discussion, fair.

Decision making can improve with experience but top teams generally play a higher line and that demands pace. His pace can be improved, yes, but can it be improved enough? Lovely left foot and really good footballer, but I would want to see a bit more pace and a bit more aggression in the air, hence another loan. Selling now before we fully appreciate his potential in the top flight- contracted until 2027- would be a mistake, however.

Yeah, far too easily ran past for the eventual penalty.

How many young CBs have we just signed in front of him, also how does these signings make Simpson-Pusey feel, given a chance, didn't really disgrace himself in a very difficult time for the club and now finds himself even further from the 1st team.

With other youths coming up the ranks.

I like Callum great passing tidy all round defensive ability and not too shabby on the ball, but I don't think there's any chance he ever breaks through.

There's simply too much competition with Khusanov and Reis already here training with the first team, plus Juma Bah looking nothing short of amazing at Lens I don't think there's a path for him.

His big weakness is he's slow and too slow to ever play at fullback for us and with the 3 mentioned above ahead of him, his chances aren't looking good and this is even without mentioning other kids coming through.

It's time for Callum to move on for the sake of his own career and try to become the best version of him he can, there's clearly talent maybe enough to become a very good and expensive defender.

I don't think there's much point in delaying the inevitable exit for him though unless we get a Prem loan offer next season, so we may as well cash in on him now maybe even accepting a fee lower than we expect just to get a massive sell on clause.

Callum is the latest product of our academy who has all the technical and tactical nous to do well, but we don’t seem to teach them to be winners and be aggressive enough.

I wouldn’t disagree with your ultimate conclusion, yet I’m not convinced that all of the others we’ve recruited are flawless. Khusanov has certainly got genuine pace, yet his ability on the ball currently appears below that of Doyle. Reis looks to be accomplished on the ball, yet he, too, has looked short of pace. Bah looks good in Ligue 1 but we have no idea whether he can translate that to England. The fact that Doyle is left-footed might stand in his favour, but with a logjam of established central defenders ahead of them all, something needs to give.

Just the fact new signings are going to be trusted ahead of him, then you have upcoming youths we need to make room for, like you say something's gotta give and it just makes sense for Callum's career.

I wish him well and I'm sure he has every chance of making it in the Prem long-term, just like with Taylor Harwood-Bellis though he needs to move on for his own progression.

Leeds, Burnley, Brentford interested in him apparently

Maybe Ben Mee's full time replacement after he was pretty much phased out by Brentford this season, hope that's who he ends up going to from those three as the other two are too up and down.

I can see both Leeds and Burnley struggling to survive again as both their managers are not good enough, plus I feel we'll have a better chance of maximising any profit from a potential sell on fee with Brentford.

I cannot see him getting into the first team squad at City given the two purchases of young defenders. In some ways he does not feel like a City player as he has spent the last three seasons on loan. Time for him to find a club to settle at and build his career. I think he will make it as a steady player at mid-Premier league level.

I agree. I know you can't read much into it but I've never picked up a burning ambition to play for City from him. Happy if I've missed anything.

Unless the old guard can be moved on, I just cannot see the point in coming back right away, but I also think a lot of stock is being put in other youngsters who have not shown very much. Doyle’s still only 21 but already has nearly 9,000 minutes of solid football under his belt. He’s gone out on loans, done what we and other clubs have asked of him, and he’s been appreciated by opposition fans. The last thing we need from our loanees is to go out and be harping on about coming back to play for us. That’s the kind of unprofessional attitude that dooms loans and Guardiola would counsel against.

I think we largely agree. Callum has done brilliantly is his loans so far being pretty much a first pick at Sunderland, Coventry and Norwich. He only played 17 games whilst at Leicester and I cannot recall whether that was due to injury or not being picked. Lots of City youngsters have struggled on loans - I remember Morgan Rogers not getting much time on the pitch for Bournemouth.

Callum is very good on the ball and has played some impressive passes but maybe lacks pace to a team who plays a high line and sometimes seems not as dominant as you would expect him to be given his stature.

I think that if he went to the likes of Fulham, Villa, Forest etc. then he could be the next "One that git away". I do think he will need to make that step though as I cannot see Pep using him if he stayed.

I take your point about the new young players. I have a theory that Pep wanted a real speedster to replace Walker and shut down the likes of Vincius hence Khusanov. Reiss looks a nice, neat player but harder to see exactly where he fits in.
