Callum Doyle

I think we largely agree. Callum has done brilliantly is his loans so far being pretty much a first pick at Sunderland, Coventry and Norwich. He only played 17 games whilst at Leicester and I cannot recall whether that was due to injury or not being picked. Lots of City youngsters have struggled on loans - I remember Morgan Rogers not getting much time on the pitch for Bournemouth.

Callum is very good on the ball and has played some impressive passes but maybe lacks pace to a team who plays a high line and sometimes seems not as dominant as you would expect him to be given his stature.

I think that if he went to the likes of Fulham, Villa, Forest etc. then he could be the next "One that git away". I do think he will need to make that step though as I cannot see Pep using him if he stayed.

I take your point about the new young players. I have a theory that Pep wanted a real speedster to replace Walker and shut down the likes of Vincius hence Khusanov. Reiss looks a nice, neat player but harder to see exactly where he fits in.
I’ve mentioned before that a bit more pace and physical aggression wouldn’t go amiss, but he’s arguably the most capable passer of the ball from the back that we have, be it into midfield or over the top.

The problem with insisting that we play a high line is that we squeeze the opposition so far into their own half that it ultimately blunts many of the strengths of certain attacking players. If we play more expansively, then the need for speed in defence is reduced, but that also means surrendering a degree of control, which Guardiola appears loathed to do.
If Stones and Ake cannot be shifted this window, or at least accept reduced roles, then Doyle should seek pastures new. That would be a pity in my book.

*He suffered a knee injury at Leicester City that kept him out for months. Up until that point, he’d started every game for Maresca, who liked him, so if Doyle is unwanted back home, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Chelsea come sniffing.

The fact he’s a natural left footer means he should fetch a decent fee if we move him on
Ball playing lefty CBs are at a premium everywhere, hence the inflated fee Everton want for Branthwaite

Indeed, but maybe also another reason for keeping him around. The likelihood of Ake remaining fit for the next two seasons is slim, should he even stay, and Gvardiol is already being overplayed, in my book, so the likelihood of him having an injury next year is higher. The moment we pair two right-footed centre backs, the passing becomes ponderous and the opposition is afforded valuable time to fall back into position.

Reported earlier today - £8m to join the Wrexham/Hollywood project. Thought he would be in more demand given his first team experience. I guess we have the usual sell on clauses?

Not seen it in any other thread, unless buried somewhere I've missed.

Good move for him. Will get lots of exposure.

Still find it curious that he's been on loan since he was 17. Did he ever even play for the EDS?

Did the best part of a season for the u18s and the EDS.

I'm surprised we are only getting 8m for him, but hopefully it includes a good sell on clause.

Fingers crossed, he’s massively impressed everywhere he’s gone and will definitely be playing in the premier league.

Not so sure that Sunderland or their fans were overwhelmed by CD ?
Heard he started off well, but dropped off as his loan went on.
Norwich or Birmingham will, in my opinion, have a better chance of promotion than Wrexham ?
Think it's a low amount of money, as the Scouse full back supposedly went for £25 million the other day.
Good luck to the lad though and hope he gets to the Premier League...

Sorry, I meant he will definitely be playing in the PL someday, not that Wrexham would come up this season.

I saw loads of tweets from Sunderland fans praising him at the end of the season and wishing they could keep him.

If you mean Ben Doak, then yeah, I was surprised how much he went for after 1 decent championship season after Doyle has had numerous positive loan spells. I thought he’d go for at least £15mil, but hopefully we’ve got some sell on & buyback clauses in place.

So with Akanji going, we’ve got Stones, Ake, Gvardiol, Dias, Khusanov and RAN to play left back or centre back. Given their injury problems, seems a bit short-sighted letting him go, especially for less than £10mil.

We have a low buy back clause in place

He was 17 and helped get them promoted
