Can't seem to let the Villa thing go.

Aston Villa

The stupid Villa thing is still bewildering. Can someone explain their mentality because I am still not getting it. Why is a fourth place finish more important than winning the Uefa Cup? It was their only realistic chance of silverware for this season and probably for seasons to come. Even if they qualify for the Chumps League, WTF is making them think that they can look forward to anything better than a swift and humiliating exit? They'll be out of it this side of Christmas, FFS, because they haven't got what it takes to compete against the top European teams and short of a sudden and massive injection of funds from wealthy Arabs, absolutely nothing will ever come of the CL for the likes of Villa. The Chumps League has more significance for us than it will ever have for them because we have the financial resources to make an impression on the competition whereas they clearly have not. I can understand what Spurs did because of the relegation issue (although they are deluding themselves if they think the Carling Cup carries more prestige than the Uefa Cup does) but only a wanker would do what O'Neill has done this week. He's not a dunce so I don't understand why its happened,

I seem to be annoyed about this. Is there anyone out there at all that thinks Villa have got this one right?

Your points are all spot on, but I wouldn't worry about it. Villa practically knocking themselves out of the tournament means less competition for us on (hopefully) the road to glory.

It's the Villa fans I feel for, especially those who paid all that money to travel to Russia for fuck all. I hope they don't finish in the top four this season now, and O'Neill learns his lesson.

The only reason I can think is that O'Neill, after the first leg, realised that Villa weren't good enough to get through, and he didn't think they could beat CSKA in Moscow. Otherwise, why not just put out a weakened team for both legs? They had Chelsea at home after the home tie, which, had they won, would have given them a huge chance of finishing 3rd or 4th.
I agree with you that they should've taken the competition more seriously, and it's a pretty inexpilicable and inexcusable attitude towards a prestigious tournament. I'd be interested to know what Villa fans think of it.
Hope Arsenal pip them to 4th now.

Only time will tell Pam if they get into the Chumps League then it will of been worth it if they don't they will regret it.

Does anyone know how many Villa travelled to Moscow - its them guys you gotta feel the most for.

The draw for this round was made before Christmas,so all those Villa fans would have booked flights as soon as - Not knowing that only a reserve side (with only 6 subs on the bench) were going to show up in Moscow.

Must admit it does not make sense, you spend all season striving for European qualification in your domestic league, and then demean the whole competition, maybe UEFA should ban them for bringing the game in to disrepute,.

Or it could be Oneal knew he was going to get beat and is saving face.

Either way they have put all their eggs in one basket, I hope their demise carries on with a thumping off us next week.

Would be ironic if they ended up with nothing more than UEFA Cup qualification this season, why bother entering it again?

Personally I don’t think they are even a top 4 side, they have been lucky so many big teams under performing this season, and they have hardly caught the eye.

City played understrengh to get beat in the League Cup and FA at the first chance.

Spurs played understrength to concentrate on the LC Final.

Aston Villa faced an up hill task, they were away to CSKA behind on the away goals rule. It is last 32 not last 8. They new they faced tough Ukranian opposition (all likelyhood) if they managed win. They did not have a realistic cahnace of winning it, the odds were stacked against them. They went for the bird in the hand.

This shows that the second level of teams City, Villa, Spurs, Everton can not fight on several fronts. In the Uefa you play twice as many matches an the travelling is 3 times as bad.

Quite simple, its because the Champions league is where the money is at along with the attraction to bigger names/better players. O'Neill imo has the potential to be the best manager in the prem in a few years and is very astute when it comes to attracting players. He is building for the future and I wish to fuck we had him instead. One season and one trophy doesnt make you into a legend, ensuring you have the potential for the future does.

I don't think they're a great side either. If Arsenal hadn't struggled with injuries to key players like Fabregas and Adebayor this year they'd be easily above Villa IMO.
