Can't seem to let the Villa thing go.

City played understrengh to get beat in the League Cup and FA at the first chance.

Spurs played understrength to concentrate on the LC Final.

Aston Villa faced an up hill task, they were away to CSKA behind on the away goals rule. It is last 32 not last 8. They new they faced tough Ukranian opposition (all likelyhood) if they managed win. They did not have a realistic cahnace of winning it, the odds were stacked against them. They went for the bird in the hand.

This shows that the second level of teams City, Villa, Spurs, Everton can not fight on several fronts. In the Uefa you play twice as many matches an the travelling is 3 times as bad.

I think you'll find that we played a full strength side in both cups and got knocked out mate!

Must admit it does not make sense, you spend all season striving for European qualification in your domestic league, and then demean the whole competition, maybe UEFA should ban them for bringing the game in to disrepute,.

Or it could be Oneal knew he was going to get beat and is saving face.

Either way they have put all their eggs in one basket, I hope their demise carries on with a thumping off us next week.

Would be ironic if they ended up with nothing more than UEFA Cup qualification this season, why bother entering it again?

Personally I don’t think they are even a top 4 side, they have been lucky so many big teams under performing this season, and they have hardly caught the eye.

Seriously?

Form since November pretty good.

Arsenal 0 - 2 Aston Villa 15/11/2008
Aston Villa 0 - 0 Man. Utd. 22/11/2008
Aston Villa 0 - 0 Fulham 29/11/2008
Everton 2 - 3 Aston Villa 07/12/2008
Aston Villa 4 - 2 Bolton 13/12/2008
West Ham 0 - 1 Aston Villa 20/12/2008
Aston Villa 2 - 2 Arsenal 26/12/2008
Hull 0 - 1 Aston Villa 30/12/2008
Aston Villa 2 - 1 W.B.A. 10/01/2009
Sunderland 1 - 2 Aston Villa 17/01/2009
Portsmouth 0 - 1 Aston Villa 27/01/2009
Aston Villa 0 - 0 Wigan 31/01/2009
Blackburn 0 - 2 Aston Villa 07/02/2009
Aston Villa 0 - 1 Chelsea 21/02/2009

One season and one trophy doesnt make you into a legend, ensuring you have the potential for the future does.

Winning the UEFA cup for any of the English teams would have made the manager a legend. Nobody remembers a 4th placed finish and a very brief run in the Champions League.

Secondly if they haven't got the squad to cope with a UEFA cup run what makes them think that they'd be able to compete in the Champions League?

We rested Key players. Robinho played in neither, Swp rested for Brighton, Ireland rested for Forest. Johnson brought back for Brighton and a new system was played with Kasper in the nets. Not full strength.

Hardly the same kind of side that villa put out in the waffa cup tho!!

Not but it made a massive difference, all are attacking threat was gone.

Your points are all spot on, but I wouldn't worry about it. Villa practically knocking themselves out of the tournament means less competition for us on (hopefully) the road to glory.

It's the Villa fans I feel for, especially those who paid all that money to travel to Russia for fuck all. I hope they don't finish in the top four this season now, and O'Neill learns his lesson.

Same here.

Only time will tell Pam if they get into the Chumps League then it will of been worth it if they don't they will regret it.

I don't think it will be worth it even if they do finish top 4.

Im talking in relative terms here, Winning the UEFA might make a manager a legend in a team who havent won anything in a long time and might not again, ensuring champs league is the thing which builds teams into a force in europe.

They may not have the squad this year and O'Neill recognises that, a sustained run in the champions league over the next few seasons can and will change that.
