Must admit it does not make sense, you spend all season striving for European qualification in your domestic league, and then demean the whole competition, maybe UEFA should ban them for bringing the game in to disrepute,.

Or it could be Oneal knew he was going to get beat and is saving face.

Either way they have put all their eggs in one basket, I hope their demise carries on with a thumping off us next week.

Would be ironic if they ended up with nothing more than UEFA Cup qualification this season, why bother entering it again?

Personally I don’t think they are even a top 4 side, they have been lucky so many big teams under performing this season, and they have hardly caught the eye.

Seriously?

Form since November pretty good.

Arsenal 0 - 2 Aston Villa 15/11/2008
Aston Villa 0 - 0 Man. Utd. 22/11/2008
Aston Villa 0 - 0 Fulham 29/11/2008
Everton 2 - 3 Aston Villa 07/12/2008
Aston Villa 4 - 2 Bolton 13/12/2008
West Ham 0 - 1 Aston Villa 20/12/2008
Aston Villa 2 - 2 Arsenal 26/12/2008
Hull 0 - 1 Aston Villa 30/12/2008
Aston Villa 2 - 1 W.B.A. 10/01/2009
Sunderland 1 - 2 Aston Villa 17/01/2009
Portsmouth 0 - 1 Aston Villa 27/01/2009
Aston Villa 0 - 0 Wigan 31/01/2009
Blackburn 0 - 2 Aston Villa 07/02/2009
Aston Villa 0 - 1 Chelsea 21/02/2009

They have been pretty lucky with some of those results.

Lucky in what way?

I disagree every game I've seen them play they play good football creating lots of chances and this is even with their two main center halfs missing and one of their main striker.

Does anyone know how many Villa travelled to Moscow - its them guys you gotta feel the most for.

The draw for this round was made before Christmas,so all those Villa fans would have booked flights as soon as - Not knowing that only a reserve side (with only 6 subs on the bench) were going to show up in Moscow.

According to the Villa reporter in my local paper (express & star),Villa took 300 last night to Moscow

I would take champions league placement over the uefa cup final any day if I were a villa fan, they're so close and their team is starting to get tired, o'neil is worried Arsenal are going to go balls to the walls for their last games and over take them by a couple of points simply because they have a bigger squad than villa.

its purely down to money i suspect. chumps league dwarfs uefa in prize/tv money.

altho, correct me if i am wrong, but surely villa will have the same problem next season if they in the champs league? ie the will "have to rest" key players to maintain their top 4 position... its a bit of a chicken egg syndrome..

however, funny thing is.. as much as they may finish in the top 4 this year, they wont next year....

I was just going to post much the same, its all about the moolah I would think. Big TV bucks for getting in the champs league.

Aston Villa

The stupid Villa thing is still bewildering. Can someone explain their mentality because I am still not getting it. Why is a fourth place finish more important than winning the Uefa Cup? It was their only realistic chance of silverware for this season and probably for seasons to come. Even if they qualify for the Chumps League, WTF is making them think that they can look forward to anything better than a swift and humiliating exit? They'll be out of it this side of Christmas, FFS, because they haven't got what it takes to compete against the top European teams and short of a sudden and massive injection of funds from wealthy Arabs, absolutely nothing will ever come of the CL for the likes of Villa. The Chumps League has more significance for us than it will ever have for them because we have the financial resources to make an impression on the competition whereas they clearly have not. I can understand what Spurs did because of the relegation issue (although they are deluding themselves if they think the Carling Cup carries more prestige than the Uefa Cup does) but only a wanker would do what O'Neill has done this week. He's not a dunce so I don't understand why its happened,

I seem to be annoyed about this. Is there anyone out there at all that thinks Villa have got this one right?

Its interesting this isn't it. Lets look back to last season and take teh case of Rangers, they didn't win the UEFA cup (but got there) but there fans i'm sure would have traded that for the SPL last year that they threw away with having to play 10 games in 3 days (something like that).

I think that the Champions league spot is seem as the success for Villa season and it brings with it a shed load more money and of course a UEFA cup spot if they do fall out of the CL early(ish).

I think Martin O'Neil is a shrewd and intelligent bloke and think that he thought this was the right thing to do.

Fighting on all fronts is hard work and I;m sure we will see a lot different team next wednesday.

Its hard being a manager sometimes.
