Can't seem to let the Villa thing go.

Making money more important than winning things for Villa and Spurs obviously. I'm glad they both got knocked out and I hope they both go on to fail miserably in the league as well.

Spurs rested to win a cup. They are the holders and in the final on Sunday. I will be glad when they win it again.

I've got quite a few Villa fans at work and they are split really.

If I was a Villa fan I'd be pissed off.2 or 3 changes I could take but to make 8 changes and practically surrender is not on IMO.Villas season started in July and they went through the intertoto to get into europe. Why enter in the 1st place if its such an inconvienence. This was not the 1st time he rung the changes, and they were soundly beated by Hamburg and lost at home to Zilna.

If he felt his squad wasnt strong enough then why not bring in more than just Heskey?
I think that MoN and Aston Villa's downfall in the future will be O'Neill reluctance to buy foreign or so called 'overpriced' players.

That pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter. I can fully understand them leaving perhaps 2 or 3 of their key players at home but 8 is taking the piss. I wouldn't mind but they were only fighting on 2 fronts, and while I accept they have a small squad compared to many other clubs and a trip to Moscow will no doubt take a lot out of the players, it still isn't right to leave so many important players out. Not only that, but those defending MON by saying he probably felt they had little chance of qualifying after the 1-1 draw in the first leg ought to remember that Villa have a fantastic away record this season, winning 10 Premier League games. It isn't beyond the realms of possibility that a near full strength team could've gotten a minimum of a high-scoring draw there last night which would've been enough to take them through.

O'Neill is a fantastic maanager and a shrewd operator but even great managers make mistakes and I feel that he has misjudged this one. It'll reflect pretty badly on him if they don't finish in the top 4 now, and even if they do he should remember what happened to Everton when they finished 4th a few years back. Not only did they get knocked out of the Champions League in the qualifying round, they then dropped into the UEFA Cup and got knocked out of that at the first hurdle as well. It's all well and good saying that the Champions League offers far more in terms of cash incentives and prestige but it doesn't if you can't even make it to the group stages. Personally I think that the UEFA Cup is still a fantastic trophy to win but any so-called devaluation is down to UEFA themselves because of the huge gulf of money on offer between that and the Champions League.

But the chances are that they won't win it. Bacon Face might rest a few but he'll still put out a decent side. The Rags may well have an off-day of course but they tend to treat the Carling Cup a little bit more seriously these days.

More chance than winning the Uefa once already 2-0 down in the last 32. They beat chelsea last year. The rewards for winning either is a place in Europe next year. If they went full at it yesterday the chances are they would be out anyway then have even less chance in the final.

Seriously I even have trouble with the fact that the EUFA Cup is now not good enough for a poxy outfit from the Midlands.

I will take a EUFA Cup final win over anything, because I want to City win silverware, I would take it over a 4th place finish for the memories alone.

Shouldn’t you learn to walk before you can run? Forgive me if I am wrong but also haven’t clubs who have done well in the EUFA Cup done better in the Champions League, is it not the right way to evolve?

The press talk about City ruining football let me tell these wankers something it is Clubs like City that give these sort of competitions prestige, clubs like Villa are a disgrace and all that is wrong in football today.

Villa think they are going to become a major player just because of a half decent campaign in an unusually dour premiership.

Good song for next week

WHO THE FCUKIN HELL ARE YOU,

WHO THE FCUKINNNNNN HELL ARE YOU.

Top post.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill last night defended fielding a 69 year-old tea lady in central defence after his side were dumped out of the Uefa cup.

Margaret Gerving, who has been serving delicious refreshments at Villa Park since 1983, said she enjoyed her first outing and that her acrylic hip joints had performed surprisingly well.

The grandmother of eight said: "I'm more of an attacking midfielder but I'm happy to play wherever the boss needs me. I just hope my series of severe angina attacks whenever the ref blew his whistle did not distract the other lads too much."

Mrs Gerving added: "This is my grandson Stuart. He's studying mechanical engineering at Warwick. I don't like his girlfriend though. Very full of herself."

O'Neill opted for an experimental 4-1-0 line up against CSKA Moscow, including Mrs Gerving, two year-old Spiderman enthusiast Kyle Stephenson, the late Danny Blanchflower, and an atom of hydrogen at right-back.

He said: "I wanted Margaret to put her foot on the ball, calm things down and build from the back. I did not expect her to bring a folding chair, a walkman and the audio book of Passion's Promise by Danielle Steel.

"It was probably for the best when the big lad knocked her over and ruptured her colostomy bag."

With Villa fourth in the Premier League, O'Neill said he wanted to rest key players in their push for the title. But Man Utd manager Alex Ferguson described the tactic as 'pissing a fire door shut', adding: "Title-contenders my furious, purple arse."

I think from o'neill's point of view, they didn't think they would do this well this late in the season
think about it
back in july, villa were having a hard time keeping hold of gareth barry who wanted to play champions league football in a club where he would be united with gerrard and forge a solid midfield partnership that would guarantee his place in the england squad
while it is all managers desire to play in the champions (and 2nd thru 4th place) league, i don't think villa thought they could get there this season and therefore, thought the uefa cup is more than enough back then
when barry stayed and eventually villa cemented their top 4 status (for now at least), it will be key for o'neill to get in the champions league if he doesnt want to fight off liverpool et. al again as well as recruit better players. i think he has better pulling power than moyes when everton got into the champions league a few years ago. Even then moyes could not convince anyone of real ability to join his team
villa's american owner lerner might not just be happy with mid table mediocrity forever, and although winning a cup is better than not, there's money and what not to be made from a top finish. however, it seems that he is not one of those trigger happy owners (ala abramovich)

They could end up doing an Everton - FInish 4th, lose in CL qualifier then lose in Uefa qualifier.

They might not have been 2-0 down if they didn't put out a reserve team in the first leg. And what exactly is the point in qualifying for Europe next year if they're just going to treat it as an inconvenience.
