"Captain Tom" charity | Watchdog to review accounts

Looks like his daughter might have been on the fiddle

I have to say that the BBC seem to be hitting sensational tabloid journalistic low standards with this.

While their headline facts are true they are clearly inviting a fuss and the reaction that you had and that I initially felt, and are damaging the credibility of charities and making people cynical about giving.

When you look at the details of what they have taken most of it seems reasonable - eg the costs of taking Captain Tom around the country to deal with the press interest and promote the charity, and dealing with calls and admin, ie to pay for costs that a charity of this size would have, especially when interest blew up so suddenly.

The headline is that they have spent more than they have given out which is true, but you would hope they have some kind of process and criteria for awarding the money rather than just giving it out to anyone who asks. Setting this up from scratch and complying with all the rules and laws around charity is always likely to take some time.

Probably fairer to revisit this after a bit more time to see if the next years awards have gone up. The implication is extremely unpleasant, basically saying that they are creaming money off, particularly when the actual report goes on to list and explain the expenditure which doesn't really seem scandalous unless they never actually get round to dishing the money out.

No it isn’t. Chuggers get a bad rep for creaming “costs” off the top of your donation - at the least some parallels here.

I do get if I asked you to do something for my charity and it impacted your ability to earn whilst doing that I would compensate you. So let’s hope this is all above board - it’s such a high profile charity it could really dent the confidence of people to donate to other causes if any wrong doing is found.

I wasn't talking about chuggers. I said fraudulently.

If a charity is paying out as least much as it gives out in grants to people providing services, then it isn't really a charity is it?

If you were to do a bit more research you would learn they are being investigated by the charities commission for non compliance with regulations namely exceeding the number of trustees allowed to be remunerated and ignoring regulations on who can and cannot make decisions on paying out monies.

I watched the video of the daughter that pops up on that link and all the tell-tale signs of confidence trickster are on display.

Yes, being investigated.

When City were being investigated by UEFA did you assume we were guilty because we were being investigated about something we hadn't done, or did you think it was a bit harsh when the press made the same assumption that you are making now?

From the look of that huge house and garden he was rattling around on his Zimmer I doubt the daughter has been short of a few Bob since he died.
