That's a little confusing, no way is Gundogan a active midfielder like Fernandinho, not a physical player by any means. On his day a classy footballer, sadly he's far too slow who hasn't the tempo for the premiership, a luxury player.

Just to clarify, I don’t rate Gundogan. I think it’s over for him as a number 8 in our team, he’s just not got it anymore.

He’s not an active midfielder like Fernandinho, but you don’t necessarily have to be particularly active to play that role well. Jabi Alonso was never particularly active, nor was Pirlo, but they didn’t do too badly playing a similar role.

The reason I think we can get away with Gundogan covering that role is because usually he’ll have loads of timd on the ball, which suits him. He’ll also have two very easy options for forward passes in Silva and DeBruyne.

His only good games in the last 18 months have come in that position, like against Chelsea. If you have 75% of the ball, closing down and being active tend not to be as important as composure on the ball and the ability to find a forward pass.

Just think he's a really lovely footballer and I've always gotten the sense that that some of our more gifted players like Silva and KDB enjoy playing with him.

Sometimes when I've watched him in that deeper role I've noticed the way the ball gets tapped around whilst we wait for our opening and everyone around is always looking to give it back to him until he sees the opportunity to bring Silva or KDB into the game to set things going. I really it enjoy when we're playing like that. He also chips in with the odd important goal. That second one against United last season was a beauty and it still pains me that it ended being an irrelevance.

On a more superficial level I just think he comes across as a really great guy, he seems to be a good steady influence on Sané off the pitch and I think he's a fighter. I appreciate you can't just want someone around purely because they're a nice guy but I think he's definitely a positive influence in a squad that has clearly benefited from its togetherness

I agree he seems like a lovely guy.

I’m not sure where you get the sense that Silva and DeBruyne like playing with him? I feel like they must get frustrated playing with him when he’s the other number 8 because he never wants the ball and never does anything brave with it. So that leads to his midfield partner having to do everything because Gundogan doesn’t have the courage anymore to show for the ball in tight spaces.

As a 6, he’s better as he can get away with the safe pass and he has more time on the ball, under less pressure. But personally I’d start Bernado and Foden ahead of him as an 8 every single time from now on.

Tough one regarding fernandinho today for me.

We need him but he's looking leggy, needs a rest. Delph in the middle? Laporte on the left?

He has looked leggy but i still expect him to play. Rest him mid week.

Team and fans need to get last seasons mojo back. Been stale since season started for me. Pep work your magic please.

Something I really hate when we play a newly promoted side looking for their first win back in the PL.

If Mendy is fit I would put him in at left back and play Delph as DM instead of Gundogan. Other then that this is a great lineup.

How do you know that Silva & KDB get "frustrated" with him, have they ever said that or given any indication that is the case? If it was the case I'm sure Pep wouldn't be playing him as much as he does. As for your comment that Gundogan "doesn't have the courage to show for the ball".....he was the one on Wednesday in the position to finish the 1-2 move with Raz for the offside goal in the first half, perhaps you missed that.
Good grief, if City don't play well these days the first port of call is to blame Gundgogan. It wasn't him who let the guy have all the time in the world to ping in that cross for their 1st goal, nor was it him who played a hospital pass to Fernandinho for their 2nd goal.

For any fans going west from London and other routes - trains are stopping at Bristol Temple Meads due to problems with track.
We are going by taxi from here as do not think this will get sorted

I don't know if they get frustrated with him. I have no idea. But my comment was in relation to the poster I was replying to who said "I've always gotten the sense that that some of our more gifted players like Silva and KDB enjoy playing with him." There's no evidence that they "enjoy playing with him" either, is there?

Some people see football as only the goals / goalscoring chances are important, and the other 89 minutes are irrelevant. However, I'm not one of those people, so your comments about Gundogan's involvement in a goal scoring chance, or lack thereof of when the other team scored, is completely irrelevant.

My criticism of Gundogan's lack of courage is in midfield, in general play. The way our team is set up, it's absolutely vital that the two number 8's make themselves available for a pass. That's how we build an attack, the back 4 and Fernandinho feeding the ball in to our number 8s (Silva and DeBruyne) high up the pitch who then slip in one of the wingers or forwards.

Players in this number 8 position are generally operating in very tight spaces with opposition players closing them down. They have to be comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and with little space. They have to constantly make themselves available to receive a pass. That takes real courage. Silva is the best I've ever seen at it, he always wants the ball, will always make himself available for a team mate, always offers an outlet. His touch and balance allows him to slip past opposition players who are tight against him, after he has received the ball.

DeBruyne perhaps isn't quite as comfortable receiving it in such tight spaces, so he wanders to where the space is, sometimes deep, sometimes wide, and he delivers undefendable balls from deeper. He works his arse off to create the space to make himself available to receive the ball.

Gundogan however, does neither of those things. When he is tightly marked, he doesn't demand the ball like Silva does, he doesn't work hard to create the space off the ball ball like DeBruyne does. He hides. I don't know if you go to the games, but you wouldn't see it on TV, but watch his movement when our back 4 or Fernandinho has the ball. He should be showing feet, offering an option, but he doesn't. He faces forwards with his back to the ball, not interested in making himself available.

He did this for the full 50 odd minutes he was on the other night. That's one of the reasons our tempo was so slow. There was only Silva offering himself as an outlet, Gundogan just wasn't interested. He didn't want that ball. I've heard both Pep and Fergurson say that most courageous thing you can do on a football pitch is always want the ball, even when things are going badly. Gundogan doesn't want the ball.

I think it’s a day for back to basics today as I will be physical and frantic.
