That's a little confusing, no way is Gundogan a active midfielder like Fernandinho, not a physical player by any means. On his day a classy footballer, sadly he's far too slow who hasn't the tempo for the premiership, a luxury player.

Just to clarify, I don’t rate Gundogan. I think it’s over for him as a number 8 in our team, he’s just not got it anymore.

He’s not an active midfielder like Fernandinho, but you don’t necessarily have to be particularly active to play that role well. Jabi Alonso was never particularly active, nor was Pirlo, but they didn’t do too badly playing a similar role.

The reason I think we can get away with Gundogan covering that role is because usually he’ll have loads of timd on the ball, which suits him. He’ll also have two very easy options for forward passes in Silva and DeBruyne.

His only good games in the last 18 months have come in that position, like against Chelsea. If you have 75% of the ball, closing down and being active tend not to be as important as composure on the ball and the ability to find a forward pass.

Just think he's a really lovely footballer and I've always gotten the sense that that some of our more gifted players like Silva and KDB enjoy playing with him.

Sometimes when I've watched him in that deeper role I've noticed the way the ball gets tapped around whilst we wait for our opening and everyone around is always looking to give it back to him until he sees the opportunity to bring Silva or KDB into the game to set things going. I really it enjoy when we're playing like that. He also chips in with the odd important goal. That second one against United last season was a beauty and it still pains me that it ended being an irrelevance.

On a more superficial level I just think he comes across as a really great guy, he seems to be a good steady influence on Sané off the pitch and I think he's a fighter. I appreciate you can't just want someone around purely because they're a nice guy but I think he's definitely a positive influence in a squad that has clearly benefited from its togetherness

I agree he seems like a lovely guy.

I’m not sure where you get the sense that Silva and DeBruyne like playing with him? I feel like they must get frustrated playing with him when he’s the other number 8 because he never wants the ball and never does anything brave with it. So that leads to his midfield partner having to do everything because Gundogan doesn’t have the courage anymore to show for the ball in tight spaces.

As a 6, he’s better as he can get away with the safe pass and he has more time on the ball, under less pressure. But personally I’d start Bernado and Foden ahead of him as an 8 every single time from now on.

Tough one regarding fernandinho today for me.

We need him but he's looking leggy, needs a rest. Delph in the middle? Laporte on the left?
