That's a little confusing, no way is Gundogan a active midfielder like Fernandinho, not a physical player by any means. On his day a classy footballer, sadly he's far too slow who hasn't the tempo for the premiership, a luxury player.
Just to clarify, I don’t rate Gundogan. I think it’s over for him as a number 8 in our team, he’s just not got it anymore.
He’s not an active midfielder like Fernandinho, but you don’t necessarily have to be particularly active to play that role well. Jabi Alonso was never particularly active, nor was Pirlo, but they didn’t do too badly playing a similar role.
The reason I think we can get away with Gundogan covering that role is because usually he’ll have loads of timd on the ball, which suits him. He’ll also have two very easy options for forward passes in Silva and DeBruyne.
His only good games in the last 18 months have come in that position, like against Chelsea. If you have 75% of the ball, closing down and being active tend not to be as important as composure on the ball and the ability to find a forward pass.
