So because those teams do not play 4-4-2, that means it is dead in the premiership or we cannot employ it in certain situations or matches as a valid alternative to 4-3-3, which is what my original post suggested if you actually read it properly.
442 is a valid option for us especially if we get Cavani and keep Dzeko.
Last season we had neither the midfield with a work rate and energy nor the wingers and the overall pace in the team to play 4 4 2 - this seaosn with different players and a who knows - 4 4 2 mean that the middle 2 of the 4 have to br able to cover lots of ground be able to put their foot in and generally have a high work rate

The problem in England is obvious from this discussion.
That people focus on systems. The England team, if told to play 4-2-3-1 as people keep claiming will miraculously cure their problems, would go and stand in those positions on the pitch and never deviate from them.
When the whistle is blown, the team should keep their shape in defence but be fluid in order to be successful in attack, which requires intelligent movement rather than a rigid formation of any kind.
This is the main reason why Benitez's teams are so frustrating/boring to watch, because he insists his teams stick fairly rigidly to their shape.
