And it also sends a clear message to young kids that if someone brushes your hair your entitled to con the ref and hold your face in extreme agony.

It was a tussle and a yellow at worst,
The Swansea manager even admitted it wasn't a red.

The FA have to be seen to back there man Webb and were never going to show some balls and punish the real cheat, Chico Flores.

Joke decision

He made a deliberate swipe with his arm at the opposition player.
You can't do that contact or not.

If it is a city player in the wrong i will call it just the same.

I'm honestly saying this from a neutral point of view, he was looking away from Flores and made no contact with his face, even if he's arm did land in his face no grown man would have been hurt. You see worse in a penalty area from corners. It wouldn't even be talked about if the ref booked Flores for simulation. He got it wrong and won't admit it.

Not surprised.

In modern football I can fully understand why players go down after incidents like this. If someone had swung for my face or slapped I would be pretty angry. I was quite well behaved on the pitch so would not retaliate, but would have words with him and probably go in hard, but fair.

Now days a 'hard but fair, but fair tackle' is at least a yellow card. Hitting them back will get you the red card. There is no chance of speaking to him after the match about this. So the only chance of getting any kind of revenge is to overreact.

Best recent example of this is the Ronaldo one. Somebody gives you a scratch and a slap. Now days there is no other way of getting him back. I don't support overreacting and would never do it myself, but I can understand the anger and frustration sometimes behind it.

Yes, he was looking away from Flores, but he knew he was there; they'd just been competing for the ball.

It doesn't matter if there was no power in the flailing arm; the intent was there. I can remember our former player, Sun Jihai, receiving a red card simply for placing his outstretched arms on an opponent's chest.

You don't have to make contact; intent is enough. Yes, Flores should be ashamed of himself. He acted like a **** there. But Carroll swung his elbow, with the ball nowhere near. The fact that other players have got away with worse is irrelevant to this particular incident. He was stupid and is guilty, end of.

I posted on the Talkspite thread saying as much.
The Collymore Defence of 'I didn't hit them very hard' doesn't work when hitting them at all is proof of the offence.
Contact is not proof of intent. Intent is the offence.

Something our resident hammers devotee seems to be overlooking. Carroll can whinge all he likes about it being a disgrace; he's guilty. Serious question to Mark; is there a discipline problem at the club (talking about on-field here). Three stupid red cards in, what, a couple of months?

So what is the intent of swinging your arm across someones face?
And how can you ever prove intent anyway, unless you are a clinical psychologist, and even then you'd struggle.
He is guilty, end of story.
