Castles

Corfe is my favourite, lovely village around it as well. Blown up as a lesson.
South Cadbury Castle, hill fort really, sacked by the Romans, but heavily refortified after the roman legions left, leading to loads of...ooh...Arthur?...
Maiden Castle is a beast, once again a hill fort.
Dover is a beauty.
Porchester is Roman and incredibly preserved.
Urquhart, on the banks of Loch Ness, is gorgeous.
Warwick is a great day out, nice to be able to walk the walls.

I live not a million miles from Corfe and my favourite training run starts in Corfe following the path to Kingston, climbing to the South west coast path, past Swyre head and Wolbarrow bay and then along the Dorset ridge path past Corte castle and back into the village. Stunning run and place.

Have you ever been to Skipton Castle BB?
I think that's the place where there's a 1000 year old oak tree. I might have my castles mixed up though ;-)

Just a lovely part of the world, we visit a lot. Stay in the Pig usually. And been known to frequent the Bankes. Also stayed there. Also used to camp overlooking the castle on the north side.

I haven't. It's on the list. My trouble is, if I'm ever north of Manchester I'm either on the way to the lakes or going up the east coast. It's slap bang between the two! Looks great though.

I think it's a Yew Tree in the courtyard at Skipton. Worth a visit, nice little town, with the castle situated at the top of the street. I'm sure there used to be a chocolate shop on the main street, take my money.

Visited it quite a lot as love area, we usually get steam train from Swanage

caernarfon is a proper castle. Most castles are just party houses for the ultra rich of the early modern era. You can tell a proper castle as the only use for the windows is to spot the enemy and stick them with an arrow. And you need massive walls.

Certainly is! The North Wales castles are mostly proper, just most are ruins to a degree.

The ones in Northumberland are amazing such as Dunstanborough, Bamborough, Alnwick etc. The ones near the sea just seem so magical really.

It's hard to pick a favourite but Warkworth Castle and the road leading from the town to the castle is probably the most English scene you can imagine.
Moved up to the North East, three years ago.
Think Northumberland has more castles than any other English county ?
All the above are excellent and different.
Bamburgh is well worth the trek as it has an interesting history.
Also some brilliant stately homes/big halls e.g. Cragside, Wallington Hall, Seaton Delaval Hall...
