Castles

Great Fred this and one of my interests.
Warwick Castle is superb. Expensive but imho needs more than a day.
Down the road is Kennilworth which was the love nest of Queen Elizabeth and Robert Dudley.
Stirling was on my bucket list for years and managed that just after Covid.
Wales and the Marches is a hotbed. Caernarfon is excellent and nearby Conwy not bad.
The Marches provide Raglan, Goodrich, Chepstow and Berkeley.
Further south is Caerphilly, Carew and Pembroke.
On my bucket list is Leeds,Dover and Bamborough.

I was just about to say Kenilworth Castle.
During my "sent to Coventry" days, me and a few friends would cycle there (about 6 or 7 miles, uphill going and a great downhill ride on the way back!)
It was free to get in and you could climb all over it inside and out, it was our playground for the day!
Saw it on some TV show a few months back and you can't set foot inside it! All fenced off.

Duncan Castle is the biggest ruin and shittest castle in this country and certainly not one to see.

Ludlow also. Nice town to boot.

Harlech is good. When it was built it was right by the sea. Now borders miles of dunes.
Nice climb outside Harlech castle I believe. I’m gonna say i think it’s at least 30% incline, may be cobbled but I’m not sure. It’s on the cycling ‘to do’ list anyway, so be rude not to visit the castle too I guess.

Just a lovely part of the world, we visit a lot. Stay in the Pig usually. And been known to frequent the Bankes. Also stayed there. Also used to camp overlooking the castle on the north side.

I’ve never been to the Pig but a work colleague was raving about the food, but moaning at the cost, when he visited.

The Bankes Arms is also a great pub. Separate to pubs I love the Cafe on Durlston Head overlooking the sea, when the sun is out no better place for a breakfast.

Certainly is! The North Wales castles are mostly proper, just most are ruins to a degree.
Beaumaris as well. Never completed, but had features in the design they learned from the older castles weaknesses. Off set outer and inner gates so they could have more time to kill would be attackers.
