Manchester City defender Dedryck Boyata has been boosted by the faith that manager Manuel Pellegrini has shown in him.
The 22-year-old made his Premier League debut in 2009 for City and was tipped to achieve big things after showing promising signs early in his career.
But loan spells to Bolton and FC Twente – where he was not a first-team regular and was played out of position – did little for Boyata's development.
The Belgian admitted that he thought his chances at City were over, but new boss Pellegrini has assured him that he will get his chance this season.
An injury to Matija Nastasic and the departure of Kolo Toure have opened the door for Boyata, and he played well in the Audi Cup final against Bayern Munich last week.
And talks with Pellegrini have put Boyata in a buoyant mood ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
"It was really hard knowing that when I returned to City (in January), I did not have a chance at all (under former manager Roberto Mancini)," Boyata told the Manchester Evening News.
"I'm 22, and the time is over when I was a youngster just out of the academy, who does not play.
"(But) I had several discussions with the (new) coach, and this year, from what he tells me, he believes in me a lot.
"From what I know, I will get my chance this year and I intend to work extra hard to grasp it, when I get the opportunities.
"The coach has confidence in me and wants me to stay in the core. When he told me this, I think after all that has happened the past year mentally, I just want to push myself to take my chance.
"Again, after the game (against Bayern), the coach told me he wanted me to stay. When he said that, I don't need to think long – I'll stay."
Boyata admitted that last season's loan at FC Twente, where he made just one Eredivisie start, was "very difficult", but that he was pleased that Pellegrini gave him the chance to play against Bayern.
And he has high hopes for City following a rigorous pre-season campaign.
"To be honest, the pre-season was very difficult, physically and tactically," he added.
"Now it will show as we try to play with other systems, offensively and defensively.
"This is a coach who has a lot of experience and a lot of positive results. He knows what he's doing, but it will take a little time to get used to the team and assimilate."
"I am surrounded, as in previous years, by high-quality players, big names, but that helps me – I become more and more mature with that."
