Celtic and Rangers potential as PL teams

Sorry about my ignorance, but i only recently began watching football. Would anyone care to enlighten me as to how Rangers and Celtic are such big clubs?

They both used fairly, ehm, 'unusual' marketing tactics to divide and hook people, based on petty ignorant and intollerant social-economic-pseudo religious differences. Whilst the owners got rich and drank laughing with each other after the 100,000 crowds rocked up to the gates, the divisions cemented into west of scotland society and it became 'more than a game' to lots of very very daft people. It spiralled out of control from the 70's onward, in the mid-to-late eighties (when I was teenager) it was brutal, the crap I sang in the name of a football club shocks me now. The city was a powder keg then. The rise of champions league focused the clubs on stamping out the vociferous elements, Celtic I'd say were more successful in this earlier on, but Rangers made strides also after getting skelped by UEFA a few times - the more chimp-like behaviour is contained to away support these days in both crowds.

For the shouts of bigotry this and bigotry that, it's so tame these days compared to what I seen, but still simmering under the surface - but until such time as both clubs fans can display a songbook that is primarily about football, and not their 'traditions' they have no place in the epl or anywhere else.

Having said that, if SKY want it SKY will get it. Personally I don't think SKY want it - more hassle than it's worth, league would need to expand as turkeys don't vote for chistmas, champions league places might need to expand (thats something I think will happen anyway, 'cause 6 into 4 don't go at the moment)

I don't generally add to rangers celtic threads, no place on a city forum in my opinion. I'd rather the mods just had a dedicated locked thread and added each and evrry rangers celtic thread as soon it is noticed. Hopefully they will stop appearing then.

For what it's worth, they have a huge fanbassover here. Up there with any prem team as well as real and barca

I watched Scottish football in the 80's from a non-Old Firm perspective and in my opinion they are probably the most repulsive set of supporters I have ever seen (individually, especially Celtic, they could be reasonable). They do have massive fan-bases (football in Scotland is pretty much the only sport) but some of their crowds in the 80s were very low, I recall 10k-15k at Ibrox. If they were in the PL they would have an immediate impact but challenging might take longer, Newcastle's fan-base hasn't done a great deal for them has it? I take issue with the 'end of Scottish football' argument without the Old Firm. The reality is that Scottish football is as bad now as its ever been, and that's with the Old Firm. Without them you could create a league that maybe 6-10 teams could win and perhaps clubs could concentrate on development rather than spending tv money on crap imports. I would suspect that non-OF Scots would like to see the back of Rangers and Celtic.

i think it would be great for football in britain but maybe not for scotland

the league in scotland needs them more than we need them in the premeirship
scotish football is going to die without them and what tv company would buy the live games

what we could do is have 5 clubs from england go up there and 5 come down to england maybe even having 1 mini league of 10 clubs with 1 each season getting into the premeirship and the bottom club going into the championship

Newcastle fan base is from one area. The old. Firms come from all over Scotland. Both are huge clubs playing in a poor league. For % of population of Scotland watching Rangers and Celtic easily makes them the best supported teams in the UK.

It's not so much the fan base of 60,000 at each game (Celtic) it's the sponsorship money they'd make. Would dwarf Newcastle's.

It wouldn't be all smiles and laughter if they came, however them coming to the PL would only solidify this league as the best in the world. Think about the competition, excitement and the fact anything can happen at anytime. Or am i just deluded and in truth, them coming to the PL would only cause an outbreak in violence?
