Cementery to be turned into mosque

A historian would caution that we should not view the events of the past through the lens of todays mores.

But without looking back , we run the risk of repeating the mistakes of yesterday.

It won't be long before burial will be outlawed. It is bloody ridiculous that acres of prime real estate is taken up with boxes of dust mouldering away because of outmoded views of piety and respect..

Couple more to go with your list SWP

-9/11 / War on Terror / North-West Pakistan
-Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
-Conflicts in Somalia

I don't think most wars throughout history have been due to religion (most are a simple case of states wanting more control - internationally and domestically) but today there can be no doubt that it is doing it's damndest to change that.

Yeah it is but people will always say that it is not the main stream religions as they are they ones that are moderate.

Religion on the whole, especially Christianity (Islam is still abit stuck in the dark ages in comparison), has become more moderate but we have to remember that it has done so kicking and screaming like a child being taken to the dentist. I'm reminded of a quote I read a while back that goes:
"It's easy for a church to be kind, tolerant, meek and merciful when it has become weak. Give it back its power tho and watch the rivers run red with the blood of anyone who dares oppose it."
No idea who said it or where I read it but it stuck in my mind.

From my experience, there's alot less religious people in the world than we think. There are so many 'in name only' Christians, for example, that have never read the Bible. Most of these are seen as moderates or main stream but really they don't even know their own religion, let alone the history of it. Of course there are many moderates who are well read on their religion but percentage wise, of real Christians, the "fundamentalists" are higher in number than we'd like to believe.

I agree. I was trying to make the point that historical events should be understood in the context of their time in order to make sense of them -not by utilising hindsight and applying todays standards.

I agree totally with this.

Tis why they keep places like Auswitchz open to the public.

Just a quick note to ElanJo and Damocles.

ElanJo:
Sorry I did not get the chance to reply but having read both your replies and Damocles' subsequent responses, I think my thoughts have been covered more than adequately.

Both of you:
Thank you both for lifting the debate to new levels and it has been a refreshing change from the gutter level approach favoured by a few, especially in the earlier posts on the thread.

It is a pleasure to read such thought-provoking prose and I, for one, am glad that there are some posters on here who can argue their case in a mature and convincing manner.

Some other posters:
Nice to see good input from some others on here as well and, amongst some of the rubbish spouted, there are a few excellent contributions to the debate, which make it well worth browsing the thread!

It's only lunch-time though, so I'm sure I'll be back on later this evening to have a whinge or two....lol

And you are??

so do i.i know everybody is different but i don't see why anyone would want to be put in a box and put into a hole in the ground. If it was upto me i'd be more than happy to let my family put me on a bonfire and save the £3,000 or £4,000 the funeral companies charge!
