Centre back options

Tosin is miles from a starting spot sagna and Clichy are currently preferred at cb in my opinion. Tosin needs game time to prove himself. Pep needs to show faith and take a punt we are crying out of a CB and we seem determined to waste millions on over rated ones from abroad instead of trusting a player who knows the club, league and is more then capable. If tosin isn't given a chance before the end of the season I serious doubt any of our youth players will.

I wouldn't say that's the case. There's loads of lads in the youth teams who are better than Tosin in their respected positions, who will be given a chance. I feel Tosin needs the right system to aid him if he is given a chance or needs to develop his game first before he can even think of playing in the Premier League.

Maguire? Keane? Fuck sake lads we want to win the Champions League not the Championship.

keane is a very good player. we dont have to have a team made up of 50m players. there is lots of potential in our own league. look at spurs, if they had your attitude alli, kane would never had a chance.

Maguire has been superb in a diabolical Hull defence. He's a no nonsense unit with great composure and good ball skills - MOTD highlighted his ability against the Chavs.

I can see him being the subject of much attention in the summer.

Exactly, we don't need world class players at ever position to be successful. Despite saying that, we already spent so much on CBs and given Kompany's fitness issues, our next buy at CB needs to be a 100% success and with Van Dijk, we can't go wrong.

I think Keane would be a good buy although I prefer we buy Van Dijk who is the real deal. We desperately need a physical presence at CB and Van Dijk is also great on the ball. He is the closest I've seen to Kompany and bigger/stronger than both Keane & Maguire who will both probably go for at least 30M anyway.

If we show Hull the money we can Gerrymander Maguire for sure , in the summer.

This...and it looks as if we may be losing a quality academy local product to fookin blue dippers IN THIS WINDOW if we don't get our finger out

I'd be happy to stick with stones otto and Vinny with Denayer when he returns after learning his trade.

Key would be to actually surround them with proper young full backs and a decent mobile midfield. We've just come off a season where huth and Morgan were imperious and we are seeing a rebirth of the likes of Jones Smalling cahill luiz koschielney all because of what protects them.

i think a lot depends on vinny for next season to be honest. if he can stay fit for the rest of this season and play well then we will only move for laporte imo. if vinny still struggles I think we will go for laporte and VVD.

No VVD for me. Flavor of the month at absolute ridiculous price. Laporte coming back from injury and MAY be the next big thing, but still not fully up to speed. So, for me, it is who Pep sees as his ball-playing CB to partner Stones, because I doubt he is going anywhere after the layout we made to get good young talent.

I think Pep is looking for Stones and Laporte to be paired with two A.N. Others at full back, with Ota and Kompany providing strong back ups in the middle and kids out wide. He wants FOOTBALLERS, not fairly one dimensional positional players. I think this makes VVD less attractive long term and more of a "fill the gap now" trade. Thankfully, and I don't mean that in a bad way, VVD has a long term injury that will force allcomers to step away until summer at the earliest....by which time I hope we will have squared away another option.

So is it fair to say you don't want VVD then?

If vinnie can't stay fit do our think he'll be gone in the summer?

We can't underestimate the importance to have at least one dominant CB. Maybe Stones can develop into that but I'm not sure there. The dream would be for Kompany to somehow become indestructible but ain't happening.

I always feel the best team have one classy centre back and one animal, even Pep's teams have had this... Pique & Puyol at Barca and Boateng and Dante at Bayern.

I'd love to see a skilled aggressive defender with sound positioning come in, we have the perfect one at the club but I'm not sure he'll ever come through the injuries.

I am not so sure what you want with an agressive player - that means a player that usually will tend to send offs, last man tackles etc.
The best pairing is one that substitutes each other. But for me apart from buildup qualities (best is if both are good with the ball as that makes it more difficult for the opponent to press) one has to be especially speedy and the other one good in positioning with great heading abilities.

Bayern right now have 3 defenders and Alaba as an addition. I like Alaba in combination with Hummels or Martinez better than both together when Boateng is injured as even with both being a weapon together for set-pieces and corners they aren't very slow - but Alaba is.
