Centre-back

Exeter Blue I am here said:
Given Kompany's propensity to suddenly sit down in the middle of the pitch clutching his calf, 3 or 4 times a season, I'd regard not buying another centre half as a huge (and unnecessary) gamble. Richards has the pace, but not the guile or positional sense, to play there, whilst a Garcia/Lescott combo would get torn apart by all bar the very worst teams in the Premiership, never mind Europe. With Nasty out for 6 weeks, and you can usually double the length of the projected absence once Dr Nick Riviera and the rest of the City medical team get involved, half decent, and preferably mobile, cover is a must for me

Would love for us to go back in for Agger. Less point signing Skrtel; for the way we're going to play Agger would be the better choice all day long.
I agree but dont think Agger would be interested in coming to us. He had "YNWA" tattooed on his knuckles last year when we were expressing interest. Barca might have the right attraction for him though?

Doesn't Agger have a terrible injury record as well?

Who was that young lad Spurs were after but a deal fell through? Could be a shout. Should have given Kolo another year to be honest.

Vlad Chiriches, quality young player. I reckon we should have gone for Caulker though: English, young, talented and only £8m.

Yeah that's him, heard only good things.

Can guarantee Spurs would have asked us for £12m+ if we'd inquired about him.

Seems a bit short term. Would rather wait for rekik next year.

We really need another centre back. We've lost our third best CB and not replaced them. Proper cover a level above Lescott could be the difference between a title win and sloppy losses. Even someone like Chico, Collocini, Olsson, Bassong from Europa league chasing teams would improve the squad

Gazetta in Italy reporting we have enquired about Paolo Cannavaro (32) at Napoli. Would be a good choice as has experience & doubt would make a fuss if not playing each week.

Think it's improved dramatically over the past couple of seasons, 35 apps in the league last year. I realise about the tattoo etc but love for a club doesn't have to override professional ambition. He's 28, Liverpool aren't going anywhere in what's left of his career, I know it, you know it, I'm sure he knows it. Would be interested to see if we tested the waters with a bid anyhow.

Bit of a long shot but I would love us o have a go at getting Daniel Van Buyten from Bayern
Knows Komps very well (through Belgium) and would be equally good partnering Vincent in Nasty's absence or leading the defence when our skipper is out. He's done the lot at Bayern and his experience and mentality would undoubtedly benefit the side and young Nastastic over the course of the season.
Whether he is attainable is another question but he's done all he can at Bayern and may well relish the opportunity of helping to build City. He also appears to be a very level-headed guy who would fit in we'll o the team philosophy we are building. Also, given his age, he wouldn't break the bank.
So for me, DVB is the way to go!

To old and makes javi garcia look fast

The longer we leave it the more we will pay I think. Deadline buys are nearly always expensive. I'm hoping the delay is because we have money coming in, to go towards whoever it is , from the sale of Sinclair and possibly Garcia (our last minute buys from last season ironically!)

We've done really well with the quality and speed of our buys but a centre half should have been first on our shopping list. If we thought we could kill two birds with one stone by playing Garcia there we must know by now that that isn't going to work.

I really think it will be the difference between us having a better than evens chance at winning the league and very little chance. Kompany and anyone look pretty good but once he's out the difference is huge.

Mascherano, anyone? Argentine, versatile (DM or CB), proven PL quality and unsettled at Barca.

Get rid of Garcia and possibly Barry and he would be a fine choice to replace,i'd still want a specialist centre half though.

While I agree, about Kompany, in reality the one position outfield that dosn't get rotated when fit very much is captain and centre half, so the better the centre half we buy the more likely he will want a regular start. Any incoming player will know he is 2nd choice to Kompany especially if we keep Lescott to rotate with Nastasic on the left.

What about vermalen? Proven in the premier league and champions league. Out of favour at arsenal. Ticks all the boxes for me. Doubts over his fitness but there always is with arsenal players
