CFG acquire Mumbai City - Yokohama J league champions

Are City greater as the kingpin of an international group, or are we weakened by subsidising loss-making international ventures?

There was much excitement when the $500m investment in CFG was announced, but this is the background: investments in clubs other than Man City. I can see that clubs like NYC may benefit from being linked to Man City, but do Man City see benefits?

I can think of the odd player e.g., Aaron Mooy, but generally, it looks like City are pumping money into overseas football clubs. There must be some synergies but they are vague. MBappe in a Man City shirt would not be vague.

I do like the idea of City being part of a big family of international clubs, but about 0.0001% of my emotional investment is vested with the overseas clubs, and the rest is with Man City. From what I understand all but Girona are loss-making, (and they were relegated and part-owned anyway), so wouldn't the fans of Man City be happier still if the US$500m went direct into Man City?

As we see with Man Utd, a poorly managed club can haemorrhage money. Can CFG really effectively managed a huge number of overseas football clubs? I doubt this model has much chance of success. People think Khaldoon etc is a genius, and super intelligent guy, well he may be but he only has two eyes and one brain and limited capacity to focus.

Generally, financial markets frown massively on companies that aggressively expand overseas because it is a managerial disaster.

When you say “expand overseas”, do you mean “expand overseas” of Manchester or of Abu Dhabi? As I remember, the source of money is Abu Dhabi, and not Manchester. In reality, investment in Manchester City FC is an “expanded overseas” investment for Abu Dhabi. Are you worried about Abu Dhabi expanding their overseas investment in Manchester City FC as well? I personally enjoy what they have been doing, and similar to you I follow Manchester City FC, but unlike you I don’t even care 0.0001% about any of the the other clubs in the group. I am sorry, but when it comes to running a business that is worth ~$5B, I am inclined to trust Kahldoon’s and Soriano’s vision more than trusting yours, yet I still like you. I have no doubt that you are sincere in your opinion, but I would suggest that you relax, take a deep breath, and enjoy the ride.

Another club I won’t give a shit about.

I’d rather they spent some time and money flattening out the ground around the stadium so there are these ridiculous puddles everywhere when it rains, and sorting out the transport to/from the stadium and Town.

it’s a good job our owner understands globalisation and has an insight into how the future of football broadcasting will develop in the 5G world and beyond. You come over as having as agile a relationship with the future as the Brexit Party (sorry). Silver Lake are visionaries and they’ve sunk a huge stake into CFG - with a view to making a hefty return. What does that tell you about their expectations for our income over the next 10 years - m given they only have 10 percent of the growth - CFGs income will be billions in 10 years time - sit back and enjoy the ride as we become a unique global sports and broadcasting franchise.
If the US$500m was being invested in the infrastructure of Man City, the tangible benefits would be obvious for City fans.

If the US$500m is invested in a network of overseas clubs it benefits those clubs. It may also in time massively enrich the owners including our new US venture capitalist partner, but it could also be wasted. I don't see many measurable benefits for supporters of Manchester City. We've Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea etc as rivals. How practically do these expeditions affect Manchester City's operation?

Is it bad for City fans? Not directly, but I'd be happier still if managerial and capital resources were focused on Man City.

These headlines are expected, and were speculated on when the Silverlake news was announced. They don't bother me greatly but neither do I think it's a cause for celebration by City fans, and I do wonder whether it's that wise.

I looked at the Group accounts yesterday to find out how much of CFG's revenue was applicable to MCFC, and the answer was 85%. All the overseas clubs are loss-making with the exception of Girona (since relegated) . Man City is the jewel, but perhaps it is the jewel because Sheikh Mansour recruited the best managers at every level of the club, and pumped in extraordinary amounts of capital. That approach is not possible to replicate again and again. I think City hope to be able to uplift the local clubs in immature football markets purely through links to Man City and supply them with expertise which will provide these clubs with a competitive advantage. But there will be costs, e.g., stadiums, training grounds, staff costs etc.

It's early in the game, but so far all City's acquisitions are loss-making apart from Girona and they were relegated. For 2018, the entire CFG had a loss of £45m (including the profits of City and Girona).
