I really hope that the draw doesn’t pan out in such a way that we’re in a half that’s top heavy with English clubs should we progress from the round of 16. Meetings with other PL teams in the CL just don’t float my boat at all plus our record (played 3 lost 3) doesn’t fill me with confidence.

I think the worst it can get is City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle and 1 of Liverpool or Spurs all on the same side. So 5 of the 6 English sides, and 5 of 8 on one side of the draw all being English.

We're guaranteed one of Liverpool or Spurs on our side of the draw.

I don't mind the last 16 being seeded, let's say teams earn that in the league phase.

The quarter final onwards should be random. I thought UEFA would want this as it's less boring and they're all about 'entertainment'. I see a world where they go back to this in the next 5 years.
UEFA see "entertainment" as being the biggest names playing each other as that's what armchair fans want to see.
Most of us were entertained by Gala dumping Juve out last night and Bodo beating Inter the night before, but Juve and Inter will generally entice far more TV viewers than Gala and Bodo. The rarity value of teams from Turkey and Norway reaching the last sixteen may work this year, but in general the armchair mob want the Spanish Gruesome Twosome, Bayern, Juve, and the rags and dippers. - And possibly City and PSG for a couple of years as recent winners.

Played 4 lost 4 if you widen it to all UEFA games and include the 1971 ECWC semi-final v Chelsea.

I get what you’re saying but tell a 24 year old me that I’d be bored of playing Madrid every year twenty years later and I’d have thought you were mad.
Exactly. Bored was languishing, doing nothing and expecting defeat on a weekly basis.

Bored isn’t playing Real Madrid, usually as joint favourites to win the CL. That is elite football club stuff.

What’s wrong with a bit of variety though. The CL is the same every year, spend weeks getting rid of the also rans whilst raking in vast sums of TV revenue then end up with a Spanish, English, Italian or German team winning it.

Next season rinse and repeat.

The cream rising to the top. It’s inevitable in that tournament.

Well yeah, generally the last 16 and last 8 will involve the best sides in Europe.

I understand this POV but it's less about boredom and more about just hating Madrid for me. The way they play football, the way they behave during matches, their fucking fans in that stadium, the moaning and diving and fouling. It's awful to endure. If we played Barcelona or Bayern Munich as often as we played Madrid I wouldn't mind at all because at least they want to play football and make sure what they do is aesthetically pleasing. Heck I mean we play the top sides in England at least twice a season and we'll have played Newcastle five times before the end of this season - I don't mind because it's always good fun to watch. Madrid are the complete opposite - plus the less I have to watch Jude Bellingham play football in my lifetime the better.

How many would we take to Madrid on roughly 10 days notice? 2nd time this season, 9th time since 2012. Can't see much more than 1500 making the trip
There's a 50% possibility of being in Madrid at the same time as Liverpool as well..

Of course it might be a case of distance lending a certain enchantment but I enjoyed a good languish.

I was speaking to a young Spurs fan the other day, and I heard myself using the expression ' character building'. Boy did we build some character back in our days of wine and losses.
