To be offside you have to be stood in between the second and last defenders. The last defender is almost always the keeper.
Sliding to win the ball is pretty deliberate to meThat's what happened and that's why it's offside. Madrid player plays the ball and at that moment Benzema is offside, neither of the deflections are deemed them playing the ball and so the last action to rule on was valverde touching it. It's flukey as hell but it's the correct decision.
