Champions League Last 16 Draw - RB Leipzig

The draws are a farce. It’s supposed to be the Chsmpions League but we’ll over half the teams are not even champions. Seed the draw by all means, but at least have an open draw where any first placed team can play any second place team. If it happens to be a team from your own country or the team you finished above in your own group so fucking what.

The Champions League has evolved because the big leagues wanted more revenue and more protection. They had to take it from straight knockout with only champions involved to an expanded competition with a group stage because the UEFA Cup had increased revenue possibilities. It's become farcical as a result in truth because the group stage is largely a procession. The odd surprise but ultimately the teams you'd expect to get through get through. Bayern, PSG, Milan, Real and City won our leagues last season and guess what all are through. But you shouldn't have a system whereby non-Champions are protected by being seeded in certain pots.

The Champions of the top 8 leagues should all go into the knockouts straight away. Then a group stage can happen to decide who gets through to face them. It doesn't happen because we miss out on TV revenue and prize money then so wouldn't accept it. We'd rather play the 6 games and make a fortune. But they should just take a proportion of the money from the group stage and give it to those 8 teams so they get rewarded for winning their leagues and making the knockouts.

Oh but then you wouldn't get to see 8 of the best teams in Europe - the Champions play in the Champions League until quite late!

Let's see what this league structure ends up doing, I'm sure that will be an absolute joke!

All top level football is a procession. We face 5 or 6 tough league games a year, and are then expected to put other teams to the sword. Bayern have won the Bundesliga ten consecutive times. La Liga is exclusively contested by two teams. See PSG, etc.

Making out that the CL is an outlier in terms of a procession is disingenuous.

Facts:-
  • No team in the last 16 from a country below 8th place in the Country Co-Efficient Table (55 Countries but Liechtenstein and Russia excluded).
  • 7 of the teams were champions of their countries with Brugge being the lowest rated, Netherlands missed out.
  • 3 Runners up, 4 Third place, 1 Fourth place and 1 Fifth place.
  • The top 4 rated countries provide 12 of the 16 (75%).
  • Only Benfica made it through from the qualifying stages.
UEFA exist to make money by any means possible, you only have to look at the fines they hand out willy-nilly to see what money grabbers they are.

I am firmly in the camp that doesn't give a fuck about their poxy competition, but for those of you that do I sincerely hope we win it ASAP.
