Champions League pots

I'm not against seeding. But the seeding should be based on current form

It's ridiculous that Arsenal should be in Pot One

Not sure if this has been said already but we will lose 20 points from our current total at the end of this season due to it being 5 years ago since we got knocked out by Hamburg in the QF of the UEFA cup - so not sure that this will do for our current rankings?

I suppose it will all depend on how many we get for qualifying for the CL next season and how well other teams below us do for the rest of this season. It's probably going to be Pot 3.

That wont effect us till season 2014-15.

Next seasons rankings are based on the seasons between 2008-9 till 2012-13.

Given up worrying about what pot we will be in

Malaga and Dortmund were in pot 4 and it didn't do them any harm

We should be good enough, we just need to apply ourselves

Sorry to mingle through a thread which is none of my business, but this is a topic I'm particularly interested (I always like to follow UEFA coefficients closely and appreciate the system a lot). Just want to add some outside perspective on all this.

First, anyone can agree that Manchester City have been unlucky on their draws in both last editions. I don't think this is a reason to be pessimistic, unless you're a firm believer in fate.

Second, I disagree with the much brandied point of the system being designed to perpetuate the status quo. In a way, it contributes to that, but it's a minor contribution, and I think the main goal is to prize consistency and European dedication. Naturally UEFA will want to reward the teams that take their competitions more seriously, it's the only explanation for winning the EL giving almost the same number of points as winning the CL. This is actually the only thing UEFA actually makes to value the competition, because we all know that financially it isn't worth it, and with games at Thursdays it's a major disadvantage for teams battling in more than one front.

Plenty of teams have been on pot 1, came down through the rankings, and later returned. A team like Porto, from an economically very poor country with a comparatively dire league got there. The likes of Benfica are very close to pot 1 as well.

Manchester City will be able to get there without major hassle. Arsenal will get out of there sooner than later. It takes time, it's not an instant reflection of the power of the teams, it's a prize for dedication and pedigree, which takes time to build. You just have to perform better in Europe. Playing in the Premiership is different from European football. Experience is extremely important, not only individual experience (of which you have plenty), but team experience as well.

Everyone is making a bit too much of this. You won't be unlucky with the draw every season, and even if you are, you will eventually be able to cope with that obstacle. Like someone said before, if you took 1 point out of two games with Ajax, you're putting the cart behind the wheel by worrying too much about UEFA coefficients.

Good luck out there.

Good post, and interesting to hear the views of another fan.

I don't think it is very easy for City to get into Pot One. It's a long way off and we will get a very difficult draw again next season. I can say that with some confidence now after our win against Chelsea today. It will be difficult because City can not be drawn against an English club in their group which means we will probably get one of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern

Yeah, I didn't really want to pass the impression that I think it's easy per se, but rather that it's an expected process that will gradually take place through the next few years, considering the strength and depth of your squad.

You are already the team everyone wants to avoid whether you're in pot 2 or pot 3, now your European game needs to step up to benefit from that fear factor. As soon as that happens, the coefficient climb will start to take place. I regularly watch Manchester City play and unfortunately the only European games where I thought you performed according to expectations was against my club.

Also, next season, if Arsenal fails to qualify, only Chelsea and United will be in pot 1, so you'll have 50% chance of not drawing one of the other European behemoths. Then you have to hope for a little more luck in the other pots than what you've been given so far.
