Putting everything to one side, he was a poor choice of manager.

It was a staggering appointment. They were 6th in the table when they sacked their previous manager (John Eustace). Apparently, the owners wanted a more high profile manager at the club. Now; I understand that clubs do sack managers; we had a frightening record of managerial comings and goings. But managers are generally sacked when the team is struggling. And you make the change with the intention of getting a better manager in. What Brum did was a disastrous move.
