I would guess the rules may well have changed since then. Too much money involved in kit deals - the manufacturers insist on each kit being worn on a minimum number of occasions each season. And when there’s cash involved, PL will be only too happy to change its regulations.

I cannot fathom why this would bother anybody. I wouldn't be surprised if this is linked to the fact the home shirt is sold out everywhere, we are about to play one of the most watched games in the world, having the players in a shirt they have in stock and can sell to the watching millions would be a good idea.
