Channel deaths | Four confirmed dead after migrant boat tragically capsizes (p 41)

The thing that I dont understand that within 24/48 hrs of this terrible event the French made 5 arrests, which is good.

The British government gave the french 54 million to help them stop this human trafficking. Yet before this terrible incident they hadnt made any arrests. It seems to me the French knew who is behind this but turned a blind eye because if these people make it to England they arent they problem anymore.

I dont see how on some days nearly 1000 people were coming across and the French didnt spot any getting into the boats and leaving.

There has to be a better way the solve this problem. These are human beings and shouldnt be risking their lives like this

It’s easy to just dismiss suggestions (not that I think the idea of processing applicants on foreign soil is that preposterous anyway), but clearly the current situation isn’t tenable either. Not sure what the solution is, but inertia isn’t really an option, nor is trying to lay all of the blame on the French either as others have sought to do.
I agree and none of my posts have suggested otherwise. There have been posts claiming racism, post blaming the UK, posts blaming the French and posts even blaming the refugees.

You decided to mention blaming the French as not on. What should we conclude from this if anything?

It's why these threads always end the same.

No bellyaching from me. We need to work with the French to stop this happening again and that means not playing the blame game and making out it’s all down to them. I don’t know the answer but isolating ourselves, pretending we’ve taken control of our borders and blaming them (even if they actually are largely to blame) isn’t the way to go about it. We’ve burnt a lot of bridges and we need to start rebuilding some in order to get a system in place that works.
The French are doing the same with the blame game. On the forum what is the point picking or just concentrating on one side. I have yet to hear a solution and quite frankly I'm not sure there is one.

Where are you getting the idea there’s been no arrests from? They’ve arrested over 1500 traffickers this year alone and stopped over half of the boats.

The issue they’ve got and always will have is they can’t police the entire coastline and not with the numbers to be able to stop all the boats even if they see them.

There isn’t a magic bullet, it needs multiple things to happen to resolve. Foreign processing centres would help, as would increasing the patrols on the beach, with this particular scenario. It won’t happen but it really needs a collaborative approach from multiple nations, not just us and France.

Don’t blame the French saying we not going to talk! Sorry this government under a clown leak or release everything they doing to the media! Stop this stop telling leaking everything you going to do to the media it a joke with a joke of a government who do nag all only fill the bank accounts! This country is in a mess for one reason!

It did strike me as a letter for UK consumption rather than politically willing to work with the French, coupled with Vacant yesterday trying to blame the French in every answer.

It may play well with some of the media, but not in diplomatic circles.

They mentioned there are only two beaches they leave from if that a true I don’t know. But I can’t see an answer to it! If the uk say we will let 10k people come over a year we process them in France then fly them to the uk, those who don’t get to come will still go the boat root. It’s tough what to do and the whole of Europe has this problem.

BBC reported yesterday that the French had broken up 40 networks this year.

No idea who said that but it’s rubbish.

On the second point, depends how the processing is set up. If we were to come to an agreement with France (which is unlikely given the current relationship, admittedly!) that anyone intercepted at any point across the channel or even when they reach our shores that they’ll be returned to that processing centre, then the incentive to get here has gone, at least for those genuinely seeking asylum.
