Possibly. It certainly meant the French using the EU protocol not having to be applied.I wonder if Brexit has meant more want to come now they know the Dublin agreement is gone.

I'm not sure attempting to cross the English Channel in a dinghy would be deemed as safe passage.
"Dublin" to a degree is not really relevent in this case as this thread and most of the posts are thinking purely about returns directly to France.
"Dublin" was meant to return the person to the country "responsible for their claim", which in the majority of those on the French coast, is likely to be Italy, Greece or other eastern European states.
Even then you have the issue of documenting the person and proving that they were actually in that country.
Add in the fact that has been repeated, but many still don't grasp, that the UN Convention does not require them to make a claim in the "first safe country".
Also with the whole process, times to obtain information , fully consider cases, deal with multiple appeals and challenges and then of course asking someone very very nicely to ...please show up for your flight back to Greece/Italy....when they have risked all in a dinghy to get here!
Yesterday was a real tragedy, but....trying to take something out of such a nightmare ...it has focussed minds, got people thinking, brought people to actaully talk to each other and hopefully bring about new ways of thinking and working.

The purpose of the Dublin Agreement was to give an asylum seeker the opportunity to apply again for asylum in another Eu country if their application failed in the country of their choice.
The Dublin Agreement wasn't really used by the UK because
1) The asylum seeker had to register in the 'first' country in the Eu that they arrived in.
2) They had to agree to be fingerprinted and their prints retained on a database.
3) The asylum seeker still had to get to the UK to lodge their asylum claim.
Many asylum seekers believe that , if they are registered on the database, the UK Government would have simply denied their claim and return them to the country of registration. (lack of trust) so they don't register.

Unfortunately it does .... if you have a rule that says that you can only apply for asylum once you have reached UK soil or are in our waters (and you are an island) then obviously you would expect asylum seekers to attempt to cross the channel in small boats (particularly as a great deal of effort has gone into stopping them hitching rides on lorries , trains etc.

There was people in the pub yesterday thinking it was clever coming out with the usual shit about asylum you’ll know the people I’m on about racist bigots who give a fuck about no one but themselves.these were people old, young and children/ babies trying to give there families a better life ffs and now have lost there lives it’s heartbreaking we are very lucky to live the way we do I can’t imagine what some have seen and are going through rip all who lost there lives:(
