I expect this debate will quickly be monopolised by the no immigration at all Vs no immigration controls lunatics.
I think the problem needs to be tackled on many fronts - global poverty, our own foreign policy, trafficking, processing of applicants and control/repatriation where appropriate all need to be better.
While I'm not blaming the French for this, it is worth noting how quickly they found and arrested some traffickers today when they could actually be arsed to do so.....

Yes we are back to square one, or more like square zero because we've consciously got ourselves into a situation where we can do even less about it than we could have done a year or two ago. We don't have a government that has a clue how to address it, and anyone pretending they have an easy solution doesn't understand the problem.

if your talking about the eu…(apologies if not) we didn’t exactly have much control over refugees/ migrants coming here when we were in it. The countries that are in the eu, such as France, Greece, Poland have done an awful job and have no control who crosses what border at all.

no one has come out of this looking good. We need to work together, smash the people smugglers and give genuine asylum routes from effected countries.

france in particular need to step up and stop letting criminal gangs run the coast of France

As with so many stories or pieces on this subject, they could have expanded or explained a few points and got a few facts right.
