Channel deaths | Four confirmed dead after migrant boat tragically capsizes (p 41)

It's not a debate more posturing. Asylum/immigration has always been the same. The present day tories are full blown loons and Labour are scared to death of the subject. And too many posters on here have an agenda and/or post hyperbole.

The thread title itself is proof enough.
It’s an old thread mate. Just been bumped after today’s tragedy.

Well, they could stay in France.
Not the point, for whatever reason they decide not to, so the. Besides which why should we expect France to deal with all of them while we sit back and do fuck all . Maybe if we worked in partneship with other countries and dealt with the problem while taking our fair share they wouldn’t risk these treacherous crossings. Just like we did before deciding the EU wide agreement wasn’t for us, see how that’s worked out.

Family ties/English speaking/badly treated by the French appears to be the current reasoning.

Heard a guy on the radio today giving it the old discredited ideas

1/ They come to get benefits - they don't get benefits they get £5 a day for essentials
2/ They come to get houses - they don't - if they did why are we spending £7m a day on hotels?
3/ They come to take jobs - they don't - we could do with their help but they are not allowed to work.

When you hear some bigot get dismantled live like that with info that has been in the public domain for ages you have to wonder about their intelligence

I repeat myself time and time again coz you are right - as a result of Brexit we left the Dublin Agreement. As a result refugee's coming here is nothing to do with France nor the EU - in fact it suits their purposes in many ways. When it was pointed out that one of the many downsides of Brexit would be increased not decreased immigration I was shouted down presumably by people who were too blinded by the lies to see the truth.

Very hard to fathom why somebody would put their life at risk to get here, that’s probably why the majority get a positive outcome with their application.

Just shows that we are failing the world.

In the Daily Mail, even comments like RIP are receiving vast numbers of downvotes: people are sick, really sick.
Usually, they’d stick to the internet to do stuff like this, some are now getting so emboldened that they come out with it in public.

On both sides, people are aware of what’s happening.

You're talking asylum seekers.

He's talking economic migrants, both legal and illegal would be my guess.

In 2017 it was estimated there were about 900,000 to 1.2 million illegal immigrants in the UK.

Either ways, neither of you are making any sense, though for different reasons.

The conditions you listed exist only while their application is being processed, it's their short term/temporary status not their long term prospects, either here, if their application is successful, or elsewhere, if it is not, consequently these things you outlined are not the primary motivator for their journey to the UK and does not accurately portray what will happen to them in the medium to long term.

I was going to ask you something, but then I remembered there's no point.

None of them are illegal - as a signatory of the 1951 Geneva Convention anyone can travel to any country and apply for asylum for any reason - its up to the recipient country to process those asylum claims - we have a Govt refusing recognise international laws to which we are a signatory ( and indeed mostly created ) and failing to deal with claims in a timely manner. Even Sunak confirmed that yesterday in the House.

This problem isn’t going anywhere. And the numbers will keep increasing. Eventually difficult decisions will have to be made, probably on a pan-European basis. It’s all a bit sad, but the current relative trickle could turn into a deluge if widespread famine (for example) hits Africa. The internet and global media has emboldened people to aspire to improve their lives in a way they never previously did, and take calculated risks to achieve that.

Think this issue could end up getting seriously ugly, as if it wasn’t already ugly enough.
