Chelsea Thread 2013/14 (continued)

I lost count of those posting yesterday who said "I think Chelsea will win". I just hope they aren't the ones predicting a City victory at Goodison.

The incontrovertible fact is that no one, even perhaps God, has any idea what is going to happen in any given match.

(Is this the first time "incontrovertible" has been used on Bluemoon?)

To be fair it's a forum and a prediction is just someone's opinion about how they think a game will turn out. I thought Chelsea would win especially after they scored the first goal, we know how he can kill a game, but once Madrid scored they were in big trouble because they can't chase a game they can only kill it

I think Chelsea were shown up last night.

And Mourinho proved it in his post-match interview.

He said, "at no point did we have Athletico chasing the game" and that's why they lost. That's their only tactic in big games. This Chelsea team are unable to come out and dominate a football match in a big game. They simply aren't good enough. It's why they started a game at home with 6 defenders.

Mourinho's tactics in the big game are the same - defend and just hope for a lucky break on the attack. They were the exact same away to ourselves, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Athletico. It's get everybody behind the ball, work hard and try and score a flukey goal on the break.

I wouldn't even say they counter attack. Real Madrid counter attack. Real Madrid get men forward and exploit the space with pace, power and precision. Chelsea don't. For Chelsea, it's one striker up there isolated hoping to get a lucky break (see Sunday).

In those 5 big away games I listed above, Chelsea have had three 0-0 draws. Against us, Ivanovic got a flukey goal that he'll never repeat. Against Liverpool, it was a mistake by Gerrard (another lucky goal) and then Liverpool just over-committed for the second goal.

Chelsea don't counter attack. They sit back and hope for a lucky break. If that lucky break doesn't come, they don't score. They don't force the issue with good football, they just continue to sit back and defend and get a 0-0. See Man Utd, Arsenal and Athletico away - all 0-0s.

When the game was 1-1 or even 2-1 last night and Chelsea had to come out and play football last night, I thought they were awful. Did they even create a chance in that second half last night? Terry's header from a set piece?

Another unsuccessful season for Mourinho. 2 seasons in a row he's had a squad worth hundreds of millions and won nothing.

To be fair, Chelsea have highlighted that the problem stems from central midfield and that's why, despite playing exactly the same way, they look a different team with Matic than they do without him.

If they do get a striker of the ilk of Falcao/Diego Costa in the next window they'll be a very good team indeed.

Parking the bus didn't work out too well for Jose last night!

Not very accurate. Chelsea did not park the bus against you. They pressed high and hit you on the counter attack. Your weakness is high pressing teams with lots of energy and Chelsea took advantage. They created a number of chances and had they been more clinical would have won easily.

In the away games he parked the bus against Arsenal, Atletic and Liverpool.

However, Mourinho had reasons for that. His defence, which is much lauded by the pundits actually is not that great. Before Matic came whenever they tried to be expansive they ended up conceding. This is the same problem that Di Mateo ran into and Benitez faced. That's why they were conceding so many late goals. It was after the loss to Sunderland and Stoke, that Mourinho realised that this team was not ready.

The signing of Matic was the reason their poor defence suddenly became good.

Abramovic seems determined to not go around spending huge sums of money again. Chelsea have to live within their means these days. That means they cannot go and splash the cash. However, FFP is designed to keep the big boys at the top and now Chelsea have reached the point where they are almost financially stable. Hopefully somebody challenges FFP and gets it removed.

Chelsea have the funds to bring in the players needed next season and they will play a more attacking style.

apparently close to signing Felipe from Atletico (left back). Shaw to United I'm assuming then.

Chelsea close in on deal to sign Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis, raising doubts over Ashley Cole’s future

Abramovich loves his Brazillians doesn't he?
