Having sat on a tram bound for Schalke's ground a few years ago, as a group of City fans treated everyone to 20 minutes of non-stop tedious racism about Krauts, Nazis, the war etc etc, I'd say we aren't best placed to throw stones. That said Chelsea have always had a large knobhead element........

It might be unpleasant but it's hardly racism,

People don't understand what racism actually is.
Stereotyping and generalisng people from a country is ignorant and unpleasant but not racism.
Still wrong and probably insulting - although in Rugby it's usually given and taken in good humour providing it isn't nasty and vindictive.
The legal definition of racism in the UK includes abuse based on nationality. You might not think it's racist, but the law does.

That is repulsive. You know this kind of stuff goes on and that some people are really that stupid/disgusting but it still genuinely shocks to actually see it.

People say it happens at every team - NO IT DOESN'T.

I've watched City home and away for years now and never seen anyone racially abused in that manner. Absolutely embarrassing behavior & for no-one to say/do anything was just as bad.

They should be banned from their next European away game.

Always makes me cringe when people say "I've watched.. ABC" and "Never seen XYZ" in the same sentence. (unless they're talking about Martin Fry and his pals).

There's two people on this thread who've posted that they've encountered similar stuff involving City fans on trams to Schalke & Humburg. I've seen it myself on the way to Munich.

Just because you've been fortunate enough to avoid seeing it first hand doesn't mean it's never happened.

I'm 43 and can remember plenty of casual, throwaway racism towards black players in the North & Main stands at Maine Road.

I was probably on the same carriage as those people at those games - singing 10 German bombers isn't racist, by any means. How is that comparable to shoving someone off a train because they're black and singing 'we're racist and that's the way we like it'. Remember, these are the fans that boo'd Anton and Rio Ferdinand for one of them being racially abused by there scumbag captain and the same club who've had to hand out banning orders to numerous fans for making monkey gestures at black players as recently as last season. No other club is on a par with Chelsea in regards to racism, and if you think otherwise & you're just joining in this stupid 'we're all as bad as each other/every club has dodgy fans' then you are plain wrong.

It's also worth noting that one of those posters above who's mentioned City fans being racist complains about other city fans on a regular basis. I wouldn't take what they say seriously.

Chelsea Fans Stop Black Man Boarding Train

Chelsea have condemned the behaviour of fans who prevented a black man getting on a train in Paris as "abhorrent".........................

Sky's Nick Ravenscroft said it was unclear whether the club could be punished by the football authorities over the incident.

He said: "The question is whether this is included in the remit of UEFA (European football's governing body) and whether it is deemed to be at the stadium.

"It took place some distance from the match, so whether that would mean that the club could be punished, it is impossible to say."

I don't think the club should be punished - not much they can do to control the racists when not on their pitchThere's enough video to identify a few of them, so hopefully they can be dealt with in the courts somehow, either here or in France.
The club should do the right thing though, and contact the victim to make some offer of compensation for the embarrassment he suffered.
Edited for accuracy.

I was on a train back from a game at Middlesbrough on St Patricks Day a few seasons ago and there were a group of City fans who attacked an Irish lad. These were middle-aged men who were singing Munich songs, anti-IRA songs, etc. You may not have seen anyone racially abused like that but you're living in cloud cuckoo land if you think that all City fans are angels, as much as we'd all like to think they are. There are over 40,000 who regularly attend games and some will be thugs, racists, alcoholics, drug addicts, etc.

I see there's a few war stories going on... So I might join in, was on the train to Bolton away a few seasons a go and a group of city fans tried to prevent a group of Asian lads getting on, was it racially motivated? I don't know. But fair play to the Asian lads, they muscled their way on and showed great courage.

I think it's fair to say that most clubs have their minority of dickheads, and in Chelsea's case, it is a minority. The incident was fucking horrid and tragic and I won't take anything away from that. But already journalists are throffing at the mouth and are eager to print headlines such as "English football back to the 70s". Now I say this delicately, the incident was horrible, indefensable but I do not believe it represents the actions of the average English football fan and it shouldn't be a platform for journos and the likes of Stan Collymore to promote themselves. It should be used for the FA and English clubs to clamp down further and take seirous action when it happens. There's a minority of racists who need stamping out.

I never said 'we're all as bad as each other/every club has dodgy fans'.

I challenged your assertion that just because you've never encountered it, means that it doesn't exist.

Agreed. Those in the video are vile c**ts, but it's wrong to castigate all Chelsea fans for it. We'd be livid if a small group of City fans did it, and we were all tarred with the same brush. There's a wider issue that needs to be addressed, rather than making it club specific.

gotta agree whats wrong with singing songs that mock or insult nazis, how can anyone be offended by that.

Firstly, I've never once said anything about all city fans being 'angels', it's just an obvious fact that we don't have any sizable racist element to our fan-base. If you were talking about drugs/fighting, then I'd say we have got problems with that in our fan-base, but not racism.

Also, anyone can say what they like on here about fans that did this and that, well howcome it always seems to be the same fans that actually get caught doing it? I take it no one in Hamburg/Munich/Shalke/Boro had a telephone to record City fans being racist, or the papers just don't deem it newsworthy when any other teams fans do it, but the one time Chelsea do it they're dead unlucky and it gets put all over the news? Maybe it's a campaign against Chelsea like Jose keeps telling us, or maybe it's because a very large chunk of them think singling out, and racially abusing someone who was doing nothing wrong is acceptable.

Put it this way, if I said to you 'Do Chelsea have a more racist fan-base than the majority of other teams in England' you would say yes, unless you were arguing for the sake of arguing.
