Chelsea thread 2020/21

This thread shows the boom and bust culture of modern football. One minute boat loads of optimism and the next minute impending doom...

Roman should give Frank time. He has some really good players there now and we have seen how it takes time for players to get used to the PL and, let's face it, he has quite a large number just starting out.

I don’t know Roman will hate city getting level with them regarding premier titles and why he give the go ahead of a massive splash of the cash! Lampard will probably get rest of this season but a bad start next and he be gone before Christmas.

Who would be in the running to replace Frank? - don't Chelsea normally have a successor lined up before giving their current manager the bullet?

never got the hype tbh, spent a fortune on players he has no idea how to fit it,not sure what Werner actually does,Havertz looks so lightweight when he's actually fit as does Ziyech who looked like he didn't know what had hit him yesterday....hope i'm wrong but its not looking good for Frank IMO

Yesterday helped prove a point of mine, in that Lampard is an upmarket Eddie Howe. He can't coach a defence

Much like us last season without CBs, when they play well enough not to worry about defending, they're great. But when they actually have to defend, it's a sad sight.

The Chelsea defending for our 2nd and 3rd goal was poor. And the chances afterwards too. Our movement was great, yes, but a better coached side wouldn't have been so easily outmanoeuvred.

I still do think they have a lot of potential as a side. There are a lot of new signings that haven't fully settled yet and once they all bed in they could be great. Whether Lampard is the guy to take them forwards remains to be seen, but they have set up well for the future.

I expect them to come strong in the later part of the season, similar to what happened with Sarri after his midseason slump. It may be a bit too late for this side this season though.

Also, average standard teams in England sit deeper against good sides than average standard teams in Germany against good sides. That has to be hampering Werner a bit. Thank goodness he didn't sign for United though, he'd be their best player in that team!

I guess with respect to the prevailing narrative that Lampard is on his way out I have two thoughts:

(1) Did Chelsea fans really expect to compete for the title because of 200M? The squad was flat out terrible when he arrived. Signings are nice but that much fresh blood at once was always going to misfire.
(2) Will appointing a new manager really lead to a better season outcome for them? I know its hectic and tight etc but I just don't see them knocking off the current top 5 unless Liverpool well and truly collapse. Maybe they'd pip a Europa spot, I guess.

Why not ride it out like Arsenal has with Arteta? He managed to turn it around.

I honestly can't see what Frank's trying to do except for high pressing and trying to win possession. When they get the ball they don't know what to do in the final 3rd. Either let their wingers try and do their thing or give it to Reese James to put in a cross. At least with Arteta you can see patterns of play and the players are trying to do what he wants.
He isn't drilling in the basics to them either. No one even tries to close Ndidi down on the first goal. I don't need to mention James on the 2nd.

Flat out terrible is pushing it, they finished 3rd and won the europa league under Sarri.
